The Anghiari stage of the itinerant Franciscan festival in the Valtiberina valley
The Festival of the Paths of Francis is an itinerant event established in 2017 and organized by the Fondazione Progetto Valtiberina. Every spring, it traverses the most significant Franciscan sites in the Upper Tiber Valley, between Tuscany and Umbria. Anghiari, a stunning village in the Province of Arezzo overlooking the Valtiberina, is one of the most anticipated stops, where walking, dialogue, and community merge into a single day.
The Anghiari stage combines two souls of the festival. The morning begins with a group hike immersed in nature, departing from the outskirts of Anghiari toward the trails of the Monti Rognosi, accompanied by the notes of a local choir. In the afternoon, the village hosts a major public meeting at the Teatro di Anghiari, a moment of dialogue and in-depth discussion open to the entire community.
The festival is inspired by the values and places of Saint Francis of Assisi: fraternity, respect for creation, attention to others, and the power of walking together. Conferences, book presentations, performances, and trekking make up a program that, edition after edition, has made the Valtiberina a reference point for those seeking slow and conscious tourism. The 2026 edition also marks the tenth anniversary of the event and is part of the national celebrations for the eight-hundredth anniversary of the saint's death.
Listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, Anghiari dominates the plain of the famous Battle of Anghiari with its medieval historic center. Participating in the Festival of the Paths of Francis means experiencing the village from an authentic perspective, amidst stone alleys, panoramic views of the valley, and the intimate atmosphere of the Franciscan sites in Tuscany.
The Anghiari stage of the 2026 Festival of the Paths of Francis is part of the tenth edition of the event, scheduled between Tuscany and Umbria from April 11 to May 31. The theme of the year, «Stay near me and sing. The Testament of Francis», invites us to walk together and remain human even within our limits.
In Anghiari, in the Province of Arezzo, the day opens with a hike and continues with a public meeting in the afternoon, confirming the festival's formula that weaves together walking, words, and spirituality.
Anghiari is located in the Province of Arezzo, in the Tuscan Valtiberina, accessible via the E45 (Sansepolcro exit) and the SS73 road. The nearest train station is in Sansepolcro, which is connected by local buses.
Participation in the events is free, but booking is mandatory. Registrations are handled through the official festival website, and for the hikes, by contacting the tour operator Circolo degli Esploratori.
For the hike, trekking shoes, water, and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended. Always check the updated schedules and meeting points on the official website.
