The patronal feast of Buonalbergo: a nine-day novena, bonfires in the districts, the ritual of the vestition, and a procession in the Sannio area of Benevento.

In the municipality of Buonalbergo, a village of just over 1,600 residents perched 555 meters high on the slopes of Monte San Silvestro in the province of Benevento (Campania), the calendar has one true focal point: September 12th, the feast day of the Most Holy Madonna della Macchia, the town's patroness. This date anchors a series of traditions, including the preparatory novena, the lighting of bonfires in the districts, the ritual of the vestition, and the procession that winds through the village's three historic quarters: Terravecchia, Casale, and Santjanni.
At the heart of the devotion is a 12th-century Byzantine wooden statue depicting the Virgin seated with the Child in her arms. The Child blesses in the Greek manner, holding a scroll with the verse «Ego sum lux mundi». Tradition holds that the image was brought to Buonalbergo by the crusaders of Bohemond of Hauteville upon their return from the Holy Land and hidden in a «macchia» (thicket) of trees—hence the name—to protect it from raids. It was later discovered by a mute shepherdess who, upon seeing the sacred image, regained her speech; the people erected the sanctuary on the site of the discovery. The site's history is even older: an Ecclesiam Sanctae Mariae is mentioned in the Chronicon Sanctae Sophiae, donated in 1078 by Gerard of Buonalbergo to the monastery of Santa Sofia in Benevento.
This is the moment that makes this patronal feast unique. Throughout the year, a mantle covers the statue entirely, leaving only the faces of the Mother and Child visible. Only on September 12th, in the church before the gathered faithful, during the ritual of the vestition with the ceremonial mantle covered in gold and ex-votos, can the sculpture be admired in its original form. These gold offerings tell the stories of generations of prayers answered; the devotion is so strong that it is even celebrated by the Buonalbergo diaspora in Tapiales, Argentina.
The festivities open with the solemn novena, traditionally held from September 3rd to 11th. Each evening, the Holy Rosary and Holy Mass are celebrated by visiting priests from the Sannio and Irpinia parishes, alternating between the Mother Church of San Nicola di Bari and the sanctuary. The most characteristic evening is September 7th, when, at the end of Mass at the sanctuary, the fire is lit and candles are blessed, which the faithful then carry to the districts to light bonfires—an ancient gesture that, in the language of the festival, evokes Christ as the «light of the world». In recent years, the preparatory path has also included nocturnal Eucharistic adoration «under the stars».
The feast day, which coincides with the Most Holy Name of Mary in the liturgical calendar, features morning Masses between the Mother Church and the sanctuary. In the afternoon, the solemn procession of the sacred image through the village streets serves as the emotional heart of the day. It concludes with a Solemn Mass, often presided over by the Metropolitan Archbishop of Benevento, Monsignor Felice Accrocca, frequently held in Piazza Michele De Juliis—the same square where the coronation of the Madonna della Macchia took place on September 8, 1968.
Alongside the religious program, the Festival Committee organizes a secular program featuring concerts, dance performances, cabaret nights, and a fireworks display that closes the festivities late at night, with the stage set up in Piazza Michele De Juliis. Past editions have featured cover bands, orchestras, and well-known names from the world of light music and Neapolitan comedy, always with free admission.
The Sanctuary of the Most Holy Madonna della Macchia stands on a hill in the shade of ancient elm trees, among the countryside south of the village. It is a single-nave building with a barrel vault, constructed by local craftsmen between 1650 and 1660, with an attached bell tower and an ancient hermitage. Damaged by the 1980 earthquake and restored in 1982, it was proclaimed a diocesan sanctuary by the Archbishop of Benevento on September 2, 2023. Nearby is the «pilgrim's house», a parish hospitality structure open year-round on the Via Francigena of the South. Visitors can combine the festival with a trip to the famous Ponte delle Chianche on the Via Traiana and the Samnite site of Monte Chiodo.
As of the writing of this entry, the Parish of San Nicola di Bari and the Festival Committee have not yet published the program for the 2026 festivities in honor of the Most Holy Madonna della Macchia; no announcements for the current year appear on the Sanctuary's website or diocesan channels.
However, the recurrence is fixed in the Buonalbergo calendar: the Municipality designates September 12th as the patronal feast day, the date on which the ritual of the vestition of the Byzantine statue with its mantle covered in gold and ex-votos takes place. In documented years, the pattern repeats regularly: an evening novena with the Holy Rosary and Holy Mass in the preceding days, a celebration at the sanctuary around September 7th with the lighting of the fire and the blessing of candles for the district bonfires, morning Masses on the feast day, a solemn procession in the afternoon, a concluding Solemn Mass, and evening performances in Piazza Michele De Juliis.
Those intending to attend should verify dates and times with the parish (phone +39 340 1118006) or on the Sanctuary of the Most Holy Madonna della Macchia website before traveling. This entry will be updated as soon as the official program is released.
By car from Benevento, follow the S.S. 90 bis delle Puglie. The sanctuary can be reached starting from the Town Hall of Buonalbergo along Via della Madonna, on the Via Francigena towards Rome; after about 1.5 km, follow the signs for the Sanctuary of the Most Holy Madonna della Macchia. There is a parking lot nearby. Religious celebrations in the village take place between the Mother Church of San Nicola di Bari and Piazza Michele De Juliis, both in the center.
Access to the sanctuary is free. Religious celebrations, the procession, and evening performances in the square are free to attend.
Adjacent to the sanctuary, the «pilgrim's house» is a parish hospitality facility open year-round: it offers eight beds, a equipped kitchen, and space for bicycles and luggage. Overnight stays and meals are free, though a voluntary donation is appreciated; reservations must be made through the parish. During the festival, the village offers the flavors of the Sannio region, starting with «lo ciammarruchiello», the snail that is the star of the August food festival.
Parish of San Nicola di Bari and Sanctuary of the Most Holy Madonna della Macchia, Rector Father Pino Mottola: phone +39 340 1118006, email [email protected]. The updated program is published on the website santuariomadonnadellamacchia.it and distributed by the parish at the beginning of September.
At 555 meters above sea level, September evenings can be cool: it is best to bring a light jacket. For the procession on September 12th, it is advisable to arrive in the village a little early, as the streets of the historic center are narrow and parking is limited.
