The patronal feast of Resuttano in honor of "lu Signuri", May 4th
The Festival of the Most Holy Crucifix is the most cherished event of the year for Resuttano, a small mountain town in the province of Caltanissetta, in the heart of inland Sicily. Celebrated every year around May 4th, the feast is dedicated to the town's patron, the wooden Crucifix that the people of Resuttano simply call "lu Signuri". It is a time when the entire community, including many families who have emigrated, returns to gather around their symbol of faith and identity.
Devotion to the Most Holy Crucifix dates back to the 17th century and is tied to a fascinating legend. It is said that a Crucifix, neglected in the kitchens of the Prince of Resuttano, appeared in a vision to his only daughter, who was gravely ill: once the image was moved to the church and placed on the altar, the young woman was miraculously healed. Since then, the bond between the town and "lu Signuri" has never been broken. In 2018, a new processional oak fercolo (bier) was created, featuring four octagonal columns—the octagon symbolically representing Easter and the resurrection in early Christian tradition—topped by an imperial column with a globe, signifying the royalty of Christ.
The feast is preceded by a seven-day preparation period, with the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and the recitation of the Eucharistic Rosary led by the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament. Solemn vespers are celebrated on the eve of the feast. On the day of the festival, a morning mass is held, presided over by the archpriest, followed by the act of entrusting the people to the Patron Saint; in the afternoon, a solemn Eucharistic celebration precedes the exit of the sacred image.
The heart of the day is the evening procession along the so-called "Way of the Saints", the traditional route that once involved all the statues from the town's churches and today sees the Crucifix paraded alongside the statues of Our Lady of Sorrows, Saint Joseph, Saint Anthony, Saint Lucy, and the Infant Jesus. The procession is accompanied by the "Alfonso Geraci" town band and concludes with spectacular fireworks in the amphitheater of the Urban Park.
Alongside the religious rites, the municipal administration enriches the festive days with entertainment: the Pasta Festival in Piazza Matteotti, dedicated to typical local flavors, and an evening concert offered to the citizens in Piazza Giovanni Paolo II. Over the years, various artists from the Italian folk tradition have performed, creating a setting of great participation.
The Festival of the Most Holy Crucifix in Resuttano is much more than a religious anniversary: it is the moment when the town reaffirms its identity, weaving together faith, tradition, music, and gastronomy. For those visiting inland Sicily, it is an opportunity to discover an authentic town and a popular devotion that remains vibrant and deeply felt.
The 2026 edition of the Most Holy Crucifix Festival in Resuttano had its central moment on Sunday, May 4th, preceded by the seven-day preparation period and solemn vespers on the eve. The morning mass was presided over by the archpriest Father Ignazio Carrubba, with the act of entrusting the people to the Patron Saint.
In the afternoon, the solemn Eucharistic celebration was presided over by the Bishop of Noto, Msgr. Salvatore Rumeo, in a special year marked by the 180th anniversary of the Diocese of Caltanissetta. The prelate received a fine handcrafted majolica ceramic as a gift from the community that welcomed him. This was followed by the evening procession along the "Way of the Saints", accompanied by the "Alfonso Geraci" town band, and concluded with fireworks in the amphitheater of the Urban Park.
The festival takes place every year around May 4th, the liturgical feast of the Most Holy Crucifix, patron of Resuttano.
