The feast of the co-patron saint of San Marzano di San Giuseppe, between the rock sanctuary and the Arbëreshë soul
Every summer, at the beginning of July, the small town of San Marzano di San Giuseppe, in the Province of Taranto, gathers around its co-patron, Maria Santissima delle Grazie. Alongside Saint Joseph, the town's main patron, the Madonna delle Grazie is the object of an ancient devotion that is renewed every year on July 1st and 2nd with two days of religious celebrations, music, illuminations, and fireworks. It is one of the most heartfelt festivals on the local calendar, capable of attracting not only the residents of San Marzano but also the many emigrants who return to the town specifically for this occasion.
The focal point of the festival is not the town square, but the rock sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie, located along the SP86 a few kilometers from the town center, carved into the rock of a deep ravine. It is a rock church of great charm: the first records date back to the 11th century, when the primitive building was dedicated to Saint George, while between the 12th and 14th centuries a second cavity was created, with side niches housing the image of the Madonna of Tenderness. Recognized several times as one of the FAI "Places of the Heart", the sanctuary is a destination for visits and pilgrimages all year round.
San Marzano di San Giuseppe is the largest Arbëreshë (Italo-Albanian) community in Italy: the town still preserves the language, traditions, and memory of the Albanian exiles who settled there between the 15th and 16th centuries, fleeing the Ottoman invasion of the Balkans. This particular identity gives the festival of the Madonna delle Grazie a unique color, in which Catholic devotion is intertwined with centuries of history and border culture.
The festival opens on the first day with the procession of the statue through the streets of the town, accompanied by the town band, and with the symbolic ritual of the mayor handing over the keys of the city to the heavenly patron. The second day, dedicated to the solemnity, begins at dawn with the traditional pilgrimage on foot from the mother church to the sanctuary, followed by solemn masses. In the evening, after the final celebration, the sky lights up with the fireworks display and the squares come alive with concerts, featuring folk music, orchestras, and tribute bands.
Those visiting Puglia in the summer will find here an authentic patronal festival, far from the major tourist flows, where the sacred and the popular coexist naturally. Between the scent of the Mediterranean scrub around the ravine, the sound of the "Armonia" band, and the illuminations that light up the sanctuary, the Festival of the Madonna delle Grazie is a perfect opportunity to discover the deepest soul of the Taranto area and the only Arbëreshë enclave in the region.
In 2026, the co-patron of San Marzano di San Giuseppe, Maria Santissima delle Grazie, was celebrated on July 1st and 2nd with the usual program of rituals and popular events. The Armonia Città di San Marzano band accompanied the processions, the illuminations were handled by the Faniuolo company from Putignano, and the celebrations were led by the parish priest Father Cosimo Rodia. The final evening combined faith and celebration, with a fireworks display and a concert by the Youth Musicians Orchestra «Città di Ceglie Messapica».

The festivities are concentrated between the historic center of San Marzano di San Giuseppe (mother church) and the rock sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie, along the SP86, about 3-4 km from the town.
By car: San Marzano di San Giuseppe can be reached from the SS7 ter and the provincial road network of the Taranto area; the town is about 25 km from Taranto. The nearest train station is Taranto, from where you can continue by car or local transport. Reference airports: Brindisi-Casale and Bari-Palese.
The festival is held every year on July 1st and 2nd. The pilgrimage on July 2nd starts at dawn (5:00 AM) from the mother church.
All celebrations, concerts, and the fireworks display are free and open to the public.
