About Saint Reparata in Pesco Sannita

In Pesco Sannita, a village in the Benevento Sannio region, the second half of August is dedicated to Saint Reparata, the town's patron, and Saint Roch, the protector of the sick. The saint's relics arrived in Pesco in October 1801, and the feast has been celebrated on August 19th ever since. The event features liturgical celebrations, processions, brass band concerts, illuminations, and fireworks, along with a sacred drama—performed since 1907—written by local playwright Giandomenico Viglione and acted by the townspeople.

Saint Reparata, patron saint of Pesco Sannita

Every year, in the second half of August, Pesco Sannita—a small town of just over two thousand inhabitants in the Province of Benevento, in the heart of the inner Sannio region of Campania—gathers around its two most cherished devotions: Saint Reparata, virgin and martyr, the town's patron saint, and Saint Roch, the pilgrim from Montpellier invoked as the protector of the sick and travelers.

The relics of Saint Reparata arrived in Pesco—which was called Pescolamazza until 1947—in October 1801 and are kept in an urn inside the Church of the Most Holy Savior, the village's main church. Since then, the saint's memory has been celebrated on August 19th, a date that still anchors the festival calendar and draws vacationing families and emigrants back to the village.

Saint Roch and the ancient fair of August 16th

An ancient rural church is dedicated to the French pilgrim, the co-patron. His liturgical feast falls on August 16th and is traditionally accompanied by a procession through the streets with the wooden statue of the saint. In the past, this same date also hosted an important market fair: a sign of how, in these villages, the religious calendar also dictated economic life. The result is a single cycle of festivities that unites August 16th and 19th into one town feast.

The sacred drama, since 1907

The element that makes the Pesco festival stand out from many other patronal feasts in Campania is the sacred drama of Saint Reparata. Starting in 1907, alongside brass band concerts, illuminations, and fireworks, the life of the martyr began to be performed in the square based on a script written by local playwright Giandomenico Viglione. The actors are the town's inhabitants, and the production—staged in past editions in Piazza Umberto I—is revived from time to time, though not every year. When it returns, it draws even those who live far away back to Pesco, as seeing it at least once in a lifetime is considered a small rite of belonging.

How the festival unfolds

The program alternates between religious and secular events, following a well-established pattern:

  • Liturgical celebrations in the Church of the Most Holy Savior, with the veneration of the patron saint's relics
  • Processions through the town center, with the statue of Saint Roch on August 16th and the rites for Saint Reparata around the 19th
  • Brass band concerts on a stage set up in the main square: this is the festival's oldest musical tradition, featuring bands invited from outside the region
  • Illuminations and decorations along the village streets
  • Fireworks display, the highlight of the evenings
  • When scheduled, the performance of the sacred drama featuring local actors

A broader summer calendar

The patronal feast is the heart of a rather packed summer in Pesco. The municipal administration works alongside the Saint Reparata Festival Committee, the Pro Loco, the Youth Forum, and local associations on the "Not Just Music — Pesco in Festival" series, which spreads concerts and shows throughout the month of August. Over the years, the calendar has intertwined with the Paccozza Festival, dedicated to the local fresh pasta.

The village beyond the festival

Those arriving for the festivities can spend a few hours exploring Pesco Sannita. The Church of the Most Holy Savior, built in the late 16th century and rebuilt after the 1962 earthquake, preserves a gold-leaf decorated ceiling and a Last Supper fresco signed by Rocco Pennino. In the Monteleone hamlet, the ruins of the Lombard castle remain, while in the center, you can find Palazzo Orlando, dating back to the early 19th century. Don't miss the Museum of Rural Life, which recounts the trades and tools of the Sannio farming world.

2026 Edition: dates to be confirmed

As of the publication date of this entry, the 2026 festival program has not yet been released by either the Municipality or the festival committee. The institutional portal's event calendar does not list any appointments, and no flyers are available online. The dates indicated on our site are therefore provisional. The program is often released one or two weeks in advance via posters displayed in the village: it is advisable to contact the Municipality of Pesco Sannita (Piazza Umberto I, tel. +39 0824 981333) around mid-August.

Saint Reparata in Pesco Sannita — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the festivities in honor of Saint Reparata and Saint Roch in Pesco Sannita has not yet been announced. As of the publication date of this entry, there are no official dates or program, and the municipal event calendar does not list any appointments.

2026 Edition: awaiting the program

For 2026, no program has been published for the feast of Saint Reparata and Saint Roch in Pesco Sannita (Province of Benevento, Campania). The sources consulted document 2025 as the last edition, while for this year, neither the municipal website nor the local press have released dates, flyers, or guest names.

The devotional calendar has been stable for over two centuries: the feast of Saint Roch falls on August 16th and that of Saint Reparata, the town's patron, on August 19th, a date set after the arrival of the relics in 1801. It is therefore very likely that the festivities will again focus on that part of the month this year, within the broader summer series «Not Just Music — Pesco in Festival» curated by the administration together with the Saint Reparata Festival Committee, the Pro Loco, and local associations.

Those wishing to participate can contact the Municipality of Pesco Sannita (Piazza Umberto I, tel. +39 0824 981333) to verify the times of masses, processions, and evening shows. We will update this entry as soon as official dates and the program are available.

Tips

It is the height of August: expect hot days and cooler evenings in the hills, so it is worth bringing something light to cover up for the evening outdoor shows. There are few accommodation facilities in the municipality; it is easier to find B&Bs and farmhouses in Benevento, Pietrelcina, and the towns of the Val Fortore. For 2026, check dates and times with the Municipality before traveling, as the program has not yet been published.
