Two days of music, games, and Cilento flavors in the historic center of Rofrano
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Festival del Borgo is the summer event that breathes life back into the streets of Rofrano, a village of just over a thousand inhabitants in the province of Salerno, in the Cilento hinterland. For two days in July, the village centers itself around its main square, Piazza San Nilo, which hosts the stage, food stalls, and play areas. The formula is that of a tried-and-true, authentic village festival: music, games, gastronomy, and above all, fun, just as it was presented during its very first edition.
This is not a festival built for massive crowds, and that is precisely its charm. The Festival del Borgo was born as an opportunity to introduce the historic center to those coming up from the Cilento coast, and at the same time, to bring families and emigrants who return to the village in the summer together in the square. Visitors find a community that gets involved, with the relaxed atmosphere of summer mountain evenings, where you eat at outdoor tables and end up dancing in front of the stage.
Rofrano stretches along a slope in the upper Mingardo valley, not far from the Monte Cervati massif, within the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. The origins of the settlement are linked to the arrival of Basilian monks around the year 1000, and during the 13th century, the village took on the appearance of a fortified castrum: the ancient gates to the historic core, including Porta Sant'Antuono, remain as evidence.
A few steps from the heart of the festival, you will find the Church of San Nicola di Mira, with its 18th-century wooden choir, the Church of San Giovanni Battista, and the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Grottaferrata, which houses a Renaissance wooden crucifix. The municipal territory is also dotted with karst phenomena of great interest, such as the Grava di Vesalo and the Affondatore di Vallivona, and hiking destinations like the Cascata dello Scanno del Fuoco: a morning walk and an evening at the festival are the most natural combination for those deciding to stay.
The culinary aspect is one of the main reasons the square fills up. The stalls offer traditional Cilento dishes, and in the past, the event has even hosted a Cilento Flavors Festival dedicated specifically to local recipes. The local pantry tells the story of this corner of Campania well: extra virgin olive oil, artisanal cheeses, vegetables, and homemade pasta, including triiddi, the typical Rofrano pasta to which the village dedicates another festival in August.
It is a cuisine that is humble in its origins and generous in its results, a child of the Mediterranean diet of which Cilento is a recognized homeland: few ingredients and a lot of flavor.
In terms of entertainment, the festival has focused on folk music and its contemporary reinterpretations since its early editions, with evenings in the square that continue late into the night, featuring tarantellas and dance music. There is also no shortage of attention for the little ones: inflatables, games, and entertainment make the event suitable for families with children.
The event is traditionally held in the second half of July: the 2025 edition took place on July 26th and 27th. For 2026, some Cilento tourist calendars mention July 22nd and 23rd, but there is currently no official confirmation from the organizers. Before setting off, it is therefore advisable to check the dates on the channels of the Municipality of Rofrano and local associations, as is customary for patronal feasts and festivals in small Cilento villages, where the program is finalized just a few weeks before the event.
The most famous side of Cilento is the seaside, with Palinuro and Marina di Camerota. Going up to Rofrano on the evenings of the Festival del Borgo means discovering the other half of this land: the hillside villages, the stone alleyways, and the silence of the woods that is interrupted for two nights a year. It is a small festival, not a large production, and for that very reason, it provides an authentic image of inland Campania.
The Festival del Borgo returns to Rofrano, in the Cilento hinterland in the province of Salerno, for its customary two-day event in July. At the moment, the organizers have not released an official communication with the dates and program for the 2026 edition: some tourist calendars for the Cilento area mention July 22nd and 23rd, but the information is not confirmed by direct sources.
Based on previous editions, the usual format can be expected: evenings in Piazza San Nilo with live folk music, food stalls dedicated to traditional Cilento dishes, games, and children's entertainment. The detailed program, with times and guest groups, is usually published a few weeks before the event on the village's social media channels and through notices from the Municipality of Rofrano.
Those intending to attend should check for updates before traveling: in the small villages of the upper Mingardo valley, dates can shift by a week due to organizational or weather reasons.
Rofrano can be reached by car via the provincial roads of the upper Mingardo valley, with connections from the SS18 Tirrena Inferiore along the Cilento coast and from the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway. The reference railway stations on the Tyrrhenian line are Policastro Bussentino and Sapri, from which you must continue by car or local bus services. The nearest airports are Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi and Naples-Capodichino.
The historic center is small and partially pedestrianized during the festival: it is best to leave your car in the parking areas along the access roads to the village and reach Piazza San Nilo on foot in a few minutes.
As with most Cilento village festivals, access to the event area is free, while tastings at the food stalls are paid for individually. Dish prices are communicated on-site.
Accommodation in Rofrano is limited to a few establishments: many visitors choose farmhouses and B&Bs in the nearby villages of the upper Mingardo valley, or the coastal towns of southern Cilento, about an hour's drive away.
Bring a light sweater: even in the height of summer, evenings in Rofrano, located in the hills, are cooler than on the coast. For updated information on dates and the program, you can contact the Municipality of Rofrano (tel. +39 0974 952031).
