Festival and Pilgrimage of the Madonna del Carmine delle Serre

The Madonna del Carmine delle Serre, the spiritual heart of Acquafondata

Perched at an altitude of about one thousand meters, near the Serre mountain pass and a short distance from the village, the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Carmine is the spiritual heart of Acquafondata, a small mountain town in the province of Frosinone, in southern Lazio on the border with Molise. Every year in July, the local community and numerous pilgrims from neighboring towns gather here to pay homage to the Virgin of Mount Carmel, in one of the most heartfelt Marian devotions in the entire Cassino area.

The apparition of July 16, 1841

Tradition holds that on July 16, 1841, the day of the liturgical feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the Virgin appeared to the peasant woman Nicolina Carcillo. According to popular lore, Mary asked that the day be observed as a feast of rest and prayer and that a chapel be built on the site of the apparition. To confirm the miracle, an enormous boulder was said to have been overturned, a sign that remains vivid in the local memory. A small rock chapel was first built on the site, followed by the current church between the 1920s and 1930s. In 2014, the venerated image was canonically crowned.

The 'sedicina' and the Carmelite March

Celebrations take place throughout the month. From July 1st to 16th, the sedicina (sixteen-day preparation) is held: every afternoon, Holy Mass and devotional prayers are celebrated at the sanctuary. One of the most popular events is the Carmelite March, established in 2017: a pilgrimage on foot that reaches the sanctuary by following ancient forest paths, the same ones that the faithful have walked since 1841. The march concludes with a Eucharistic celebration presided over by the diocesan bishop.

July 16: Festival and candlelight procession

The highlight is July 16, the liturgical memorial of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and the anniversary of the apparition. In the evening, a solemn Mass is celebrated, and the statue of the Virgin is carried in a procession, accompanied by the glow of the candlelight vigil, from the sanctuary to the parish church of Acquafondata. On the last Saturday of July, the statue returns to the sanctuary, where it remains throughout August.

A pilgrimage in the mountains of Lazio

More than just a local festival, the Madonna del Carmine delle Serre is an experience of faith and community that intertwines popular religion, the Apennine landscape, and tradition. For visitors, it is also an opportunity to discover an authentic and little-known corner of Lazio, defined by silence, forests, and panoramas that stretch as far as the nearby Molise region.
