Ladin traditions and mountain hut gastronomy in Val San Nicolò
The Festa ta Mont is one of the most cherished summer events in Val di Fassa, transforming Val San Nicolò every year into a grand open-air stage dedicated to Ladin culture and traditions. The name, in the Ladin language, literally means "festival in the mountains": the event takes place across the meadows and along the trails of this side valley, nestled between the woods and the Dolomite walls of the municipality of San Giovanni di Fassa-Sèn Jan, in the province of Trento, in the heart of Trentino-Alto Adige.
Festa ta Mont is much more than a simple festival: it is a collective narrative of the Fassa community. Each edition revolves around a specific theme, explored through traditional costumes, photographic exhibitions, local storytelling, folk music, and dance. Along the path that winds up the valley, visitors encounter groups of musicians, dancers in traditional attire, artisans, and figures re-enacting the life of yesteryear in mountain huts and farmsteads.
The culinary heart of the festival is managed by around twenty food stalls run by volunteers, where one can savor traditional Fassa and Trentino dishes:
Festa ta Mont is also designed for children, with zip lines, trampolines, hay-bale play areas, and creative workshops. On Sunday, free excursions accompanied by alpine guides are scheduled, offering a choice of routes with varying difficulty levels to discover Val San Nicolò and its breathtaking views. The entire event is made possible by the dedication of over two hundred volunteers from the Fassa community.
The valley can be reached on foot along the trails or via the convenient shuttle bus that connects the Vidor area, near Pozza di Fassa, to the Saùch parking lot at the entrance of Val San Nicolò. It is a sustainable way to experience one of the most picturesque valleys in the municipality of San Giovanni di Fassa-Sèn Jan and the entire Trentino region.
The Festa ta Mont 2026 was held on August 1st and 2nd in Val San Nicolò, a side valley above Pozza di Fassa (municipality of San Giovanni di Fassa-Sèn Jan, Trentino). The central theme of the edition was climbing: "the story is enriched with a new voice, that of rock and verticality, of those who chose these walls as a place of challenge, freedom, and discovery".
As per tradition, the festival offered about twenty stalls featuring traditional Fassa gastronomy — platters, canederli, polenta, goulash, porchetta, mountain desserts — along with roving concerts, folk dancing, exhibitions, and activities for children. On Sunday, the free excursions with alpine guides were held again. The valley was accessible on foot or by shuttle bus from Vidor to the Saùch parking lot.
