The mid-August San Rocco festival in Valgerola
Pedesina, in Valgerola (province of Sondrio), is the smallest municipality in Italy by number of residents, yet it preserves a surprisingly vibrant calendar of traditions. Among these, the San Rocco festival on August 16th is one of the most cherished events of the summer: not by chance, one of the village streets and the Pro Loco headquarters itself bear the saint's name.
Saint Roch, historically invoked as a protector against epidemics, is a figure dear to popular Alpine devotion. In Pedesina, his festival is celebrated with Holy Mass and procession, right in the middle of Ferragosto, when the village reaches its peak population with residents and holidaymakers.
The Pro Loco of Pedesina supports the parish and includes the commemoration in the busy summer program, which in the days around it also offers the Ferragosto tombola (bingo), open-air cinema evenings, and polenta meals. An example of how, in the small mountain villages of the province of Sondrio, patronal and devotional festivals remain the true glue of the community.
The San Rocco festival 2026 in Pedesina is celebrated on Sunday, August 16th, according to the official Pro Loco calendar. The day is marked by Holy Mass and the procession in honor of the saint, in the heart of the village summer.
The event takes place around Ferragosto, when the village of Valgerola is most lively: the Pro Loco of Pedesina also offers tombola and open-air cinema evenings at the Sala Belvedere on the same days.
The times of the celebrations will be communicated by the parish and the Pro Loco of Pedesina in the preceding days.
