The patron saint of Salcito and the blessing of taxis from Rome
In Salcito, a village in the inland Molise region, province of Campobasso, June 14th is the feast day of the patron saint San Basilio Magno. The festival is the moment of greatest cohesion for the community, with a solemn mass, a procession of the saint's statue through the village streets, and civil celebrations.
The element that makes this festival truly unique is the blessing of the taxis from Rome. Salcito, like many villages in the inland areas of Molise, has experienced significant emigration to the capital, where many Salcito residents found work as taxi drivers. Every year, for the patron saint's festival, many of them return to their hometown and have their vehicles blessed, in a ritual that intertwines faith, identity, and the memory of emigration.
The blessing of the taxis has become the symbol of the indissoluble bond between Salcito and its emigrants: an event that every June 14th brings back to the village those who left, strengthening the ties of a community that, though dispersed, has never severed its Molise roots.
In 2026, Salcito will once again renew the celebration of its patron saint San Basilio Magno on June 14th. The day will be marked by a solemn mass, a procession of the saint's statue through the village streets, and the unique blessing of taxis from Rome, an identity ritual that brings back to the village the many Salcito residents who emigrated to the capital.
The detailed timetable will be released by the parish and the municipality in the weeks prior.
