The midsummer festival in Poggio Sannita, between devotion and popular games
On August 16th, in the middle of summer, Poggio Sannita celebrates San Rocco, one of the most revered pilgrim saints in the villages of Central-Southern Italy. The festival, in the municipality of the province of Isernia once called Caccavone, combines the religious dimension with the popular games that have always accompanied this event, in a climate of joy and community gathering.
The festival falls in the period of the year when the village comes alive the most, with the return of emigrants and the arrival of visitors curious to discover the famous Babaci — life-size figures made from recycled materials that have populated alleys and squares since 2021, depicting scenes of daily life. San Rocco thus becomes one of the events that mark the Poggio Sannita summer.
Like any self-respecting Molise festival, the San Rocco festival is also an occasion to gather around the flavors of the region: from scherpelle, the typical village dessert, to the traditional peasant dishes of Alto Molise. A genuine opportunity to experience an authentic village, far from the routes of mass tourism.
For August 16, 2026, Poggio Sannita renews the festival in honor of San Rocco, with religious rites and traditional popular games that characterize the day. The program details will be announced locally in the preceding days.
Program coming soon. The festival traditionally includes the religious celebration in honor of San Rocco and popular games for the village. Specific dates and times for August 16, 2026, will be communicated by the parish and the municipality.
