Pilgrimage and popular festival at the church of Santa Maria Maddalena in the Sibillini Mountains
The Festa della Montagna in Bolognola, in the province of Macerata, is one of those traditions that tell the soul of the Marche Apennines. It takes place around the small church of Santa Maria Maddalena, an isolated Romanesque jewel located at 1112 metres above sea level, right in the Monti Sibillini National Park. The little church, built around the mid-14th century, ideally marks the border between the territories of several inland municipalities: Bolognola, Caldarola, Fiastra, Cessapalombo, and Valfornace (formerly Pievebovigliana).
For just one day a year, around July 22nd — the day the Catholic Church celebrates Saint Mary Magdalene — this almost remote place becomes a meeting point and a place of devotion again. The festival in its current form was born in 2007, on the initiative of the administrations of the surrounding municipalities, with the aim of restoring the church's role as a place of worship and celebrating mountain life. Since then, it has attracted a growing number of participants, including faithful, hikers, and local families.
The day combines the religious dimension with the popular one. Processions start from the nearby villages and ascend to the plateau, where an open-air mass is celebrated in the evocative setting of the high-altitude meadows. Around the church, a communal lunch, singing, and mountain folklore moments take shape, making this occasion a true village festival spread across several hamlets.
The church of Santa Maria Maddalena still preserves fragments of 14th-century frescoes — including a Crucifix, the figure of Mary Magdalene, and some angel faces — attributable to the style of the painter Cola di Pietro, active in the area between 1370 and 1380. Reaching it requires a short walk, but this is precisely what makes the Festa della Montagna an authentic experience: you arrive on foot, share a day at altitude, and rediscover the ancient bond between the communities of the Sibillini and their mountains. The festival is among the most cherished events in the area of Bolognola, a small mountain municipality in the Province of Macerata, in the Marche region.
The Festa della Montagna 2026 will be held around the church of Santa Maria Maddalena, above Bolognola (MC), confirmed for July 23, 2026. The occasion follows the liturgical calendar of Saint Mary Magdalene (July 22nd) and maintains the structure consolidated since 2007: a walk up to the plateau at 1112 meters, processions from nearby villages, celebration of mass in the setting of the high-altitude meadows, and convivial and folkloric moments.
The detailed program, with the times for processions, mass, and activities, is usually published by the Municipality of Bolognola and the parishes of the involved municipalities in the weeks preceding the festival.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, with precise times for processions, mass, and activities, has not yet been published. It will be announced by the Municipality of Bolognola and the parishes of the involved municipalities in the weeks preceding the festival.
Based on previous editions, the day traditionally includes:
Open-air mass and processions at the Romanesque church of Santa Maria Maddalena, at 1112 m in the Monti Sibillini National Park, with the participation of communities from several municipalities in the Macerata hinterland.
Church of Santa Maria Maddalena, plateau at about 1112 m a.s.l. in the Monti Sibillini National Park, on the border between the municipalities of Bolognola, Caldarola, Fiastra, Cessapalombo, and Valfornace (Province of Macerata, Marche).
The church is reached by a walk along the paths that ascend from the nearby villages: trekking shoes, layered clothing, and water are recommended. By car, you can reach the vicinity of the starting points of the trails along the Fiastrone valley and from Bolognola.
As this is a high-altitude and outdoor event, it is advisable to start in the morning and check the weather conditions. For the updated program and mass and procession times, it is recommended to consult the Municipality of Bolognola and the parishes of the involved municipalities.
