Mario Brunello's international cello masterclass in the villages of the Monti Sibillini
I Suoni dei Borghi is the international cello masterclass that every summer brings one of the greatest cellists of our time, Mario Brunello, to San Ginesio, a medieval village in the province of Macerata awarded the Orange Flag by the Touring Club and listed among the most beautiful villages in Italy. Conceived by Brunello himself along with Annalisa Pavoni, the event takes place at the foot of the Monti Sibillini and transforms the historic center into an open-air musical laboratory for a week.
The experience is not a simple masterclass; it is a project that blends advanced instrumental training with village life. Students alternate individual lessons, ensemble music, and concerts with walks, excursions, and encounters with local crafts and artistic heritage. The program revolves around three keywords dear to Brunello: the Method for study, the Form for interpretation, and Nature as a source of inspiration.
The educational offering is divided into two distinct paths. The closed-enrollment advanced course is aimed at young cellists already in professional training, accompanied on the piano by Maria Semeraro. Alongside it is the "9-99 years" program, open to amateur musicians of all levels and ages, with ensemble music coordinated by the Dutch cellist and educator Sanne de Graaf. Lessons are held in the Auditorium of the Church of Sant'Agostino, in the heart of San Ginesio.
Over the years, the event has attracted students from all over Italy and abroad, with participants from France, the Netherlands, Spain, and Japan. The week is punctuated by concerts open to the public, from the cello orchestra to the final student concerts, which animate the village spaces and make San Ginesio a small capital of music in the Marche for the entire duration of the festival. It is a precious opportunity for visitors to the region to discover the Macerata hinterland accompanied by the notes of the cello.
The VIII edition of Mario Brunello's cello masterclass in San Ginesio takes place from August 3 to 8, 2026, hosted at the Auditorium of the Church of Sant'Agostino. The week combines individual lessons, ensemble music, concerts, excursions in the Monti Sibillini, and visits to local crafts and the village's artistic heritage. Registration remains open until June 30, 2026.
The detailed program of public concerts and the repertoire will be announced by the organizers closer to the event.
The opening concert on Monday, August 3, with Mario Brunello, the excursion-concert in the Monti Sibillini, and the final concerts by students and the cello orchestra are the most anticipated moments of the week.
San Ginesio can be reached by car from the Tolentino or Macerata exit of the SS77 Val di Chienti highway. The nearest train stations are Tolentino and Macerata, from which you can continue by bus or car. The reference airport is Ancona-Falconara.
Lessons and most concerts take place in the Auditorium of the Church of Sant'Agostino, in the historic center of San Ginesio.
Participation in the masterclass is limited, with differentiated registration fees between the advanced course and the "9-99 years" program. Registration closes at the end of June. For information: [email protected].
The public concerts during the week are also accessible to those not participating in the masterclass; it is advisable to check schedules and admission on the San Ginesio tourist website.
