The festival celebrating rice, the symbolic product of the South Milan countryside, with risottos, vintage tractors, and music
The Festa del Riso di Carpiano is the gastronomic festival celebrating the quintessential local product of this corner of the province of Milan: rice. Carpiano is indeed located in the rice-growing plain south of the Lombard capital, where rice paddies have shaped the landscape and local economy for centuries. Organised by the Pro Loco of Carpiano, the festival brings the best of this tradition to Piazza Colonna, blending cuisine, rural culture, and conviviality.
The absolute star is risotto, prepared in numerous variations by Pro Loco volunteers: from risotto with culatello and balsamic vinegar to one with cheese, herbs, and nuts, not to mention arancini, salamella sandwiches, polenta with cheese, and a rich selection of homemade desserts and cakes. The food stalls are the beating heart of the event, showcasing rice in all its possibilities.
The Festa del Riso is not just about food. A large section is dedicated to the agricultural culture of the area: an exhibition on the rice supply chain, a display of old and new agricultural machinery, working models of farm equipment, as well as vintage cars and motorcycles that delight enthusiasts. There's also a flea market, cooking competitions, photo opportunities, and guided tours.
Evenings are enlivened by live music, group dances, and baby dance for the little ones. The Festa del Riso thus confirms itself as an event for all ages, successfully combining the promotion of an iconic product with popular entertainment. For the Municipality of Carpiano, it is one of the most important occasions of the year to showcase itself and welcome visitors from the Milanese hinterland.
In 2026, the Festa del Riso di Carpiano is scheduled again, with indicative dates in early October (October 3-5, still to be confirmed by the Pro Loco). The event, in Piazza Colonna, celebrates the local rice with the famous risotto prepared in various versions, food stalls, an exhibition on the supply chain, and a display of old and new agricultural machinery, vintage tractors, and vehicles. Evenings are enlivened by live music, group dances, and baby dance for children. It is advisable to check the dates with the Pro Loco before attending.
