Three autumn Sundays of cantons, folklore, and the goose race
In Lacchiarella, in the Province of Milan, Autunno Ciarlasco with the Palio dell'Oca is a folk festival rooted in 1976, when a group of local friends, gathered at the Osteria Monte Grappa, decided to create an event to promote and enhance their community. Since then, the festival has grown to become a highly anticipated event for the entire Milanese plain.
The heart of the festival is the competition between the seven cantons into which the town is historically divided: Canton dla Betula, Canton di Municipin, Canton dal Piaseou, Canton dal Piss, Canton dal Prà Vedar, Canton dal Punt da legn, and Canton di San Ruchin. Each canton participates with folk groups, allegorical floats, costumes, flag-wavers, majorettes, dancers, and whip crackers, animating the town center streets with colorful parades.
The highlight and conclusion is the spectacular goose race ("la corsa delle Oche"), which determines the winning canton and thrills tens of thousands of spectators from all over the Region of Lombardy every year. It is the culmination of a festival that blends folklore, competition, and peasant roots.
During the three Sundays, there are no shortage of food stalls with local specialties, colorful market stalls, and convivial moments that make Autunno Ciarlasco a true village festival in the most authentic sense of the word. Organized by the Associazione dei Cantoni Ciarlaschi (Association of Ciarlasco Cantons) together with the Municipality and the Pro Loco, it is one of the most deeply rooted traditions of the area.
The 2026 edition, the 48th, of Autunno Ciarlasco with the Palio dell'Oca will be held in Lacchiarella over three consecutive Sundays between late September and October. The seven cantons of the town will compete with parades, allegorical floats, costumes, folk groups, flag-wavers, majorettes, and whip crackers.
