The road race in the Swabian village of Oria
The Federico II di Svevia Trophy – City of Oria is a road running race held in Oria, one of the most charming villages in the province of Brindisi, Puglia. The event is named after Emperor Frederick II of Swabia, who between 1225 and 1233 commissioned the construction of the imposing Swabian Castle on the hill of Oria. With its characteristic triangular layout, it remains the city's iconic landmark. Running here means traversing a medieval historic center filled with narrow alleys, stairways, and ancient gates like the Porta degli Ebrei and Porta Manfredi.
The course covers approximately 9 kilometers, featuring a slightly undulating urban and suburban route that is entirely closed to traffic and monitored by local authorities and volunteers. The event is organized by ASD AppiAtleticA, a local athletics club, under the aegis of FIDAL and with the patronage of the Puglia Region and the Municipality of Oria. The Trophy is part of the Brento Provincial Circuit (the "ways of Brento"), a running calendar that visits various towns in the Brindisi area throughout the season.
The race is open to FIDAL-registered athletes in the Junior, Promising, Senior, and Master categories, as well as holders of a FIDAL RunCard with a valid competitive medical certificate and EPS members with an EPS Runcard, in compliance with current health regulations. Individual, category, and team rankings are provided, with awards for overall male and female winners, various categories, and the top three most represented clubs at the finish line.
Nestled on a hill in the Ionian arc about forty kilometers from Brindisi, Oria has just over fourteen thousand inhabitants and maintains a strong identity linked to its Swabian medieval past. The Castle, described as a "vessel suspended in the air" due to its triangular shape with the Quadrata, Cavaliere, and Salto towers, along with the maze of the historic center, provides the perfect backdrop for an evening race that blends sport, tradition, and the promotion of local heritage.
The inaugural edition of the Federico II di Svevia Trophy – City of Oria opened the calendar for this new running event in the Swabian village in the province of Brindisi. The race, valid as the eighth stage of the Brento Provincial Circuit, took place on a slightly undulating urban and suburban course of approximately 9 kilometers, closed to traffic, winding through the streets and ancient gates of Oria.
Thirty athletes from eleven clubs took part in the first edition, with individual, category, and team rankings, and awards for the overall winners and the top clubs at the finish line.
Race reserved for FIDAL-registered athletes (Junior, Promising, Senior, and Master), holders of a FIDAL RunCard with a competitive medical certificate, and EPS members with an EPS Runcard. Eighth stage of the Brento Provincial Circuit.
Oria is located in the province of Brindisi, along the route between Brindisi and Taranto. By car, it is accessible via the SS7 (Via Appia); by train, it is served by the railway station on the Martina Franca–Lecce line. The start and finish lines are located at the Villa Comunale, right next to the historic center.
Registrations must be completed via the ICRON.IT portal by June 25th. The participation fee is 7.00 euros; the one-time race chip costs 10.00 euros (for those who have not already purchased it during previous circuit events), and the daily bib fee is 2.00 euros for clubs from outside the region. Payment is made via bank transfer to ASD AppiAtleticA.
The race starts at sunset: we recommend wearing light racing gear. For spectators, we suggest taking advantage of the evening to visit the Swabian Castle and Oria's historic center.
