The solemn celebration of Messina's patron saint, featuring the Pontifical Mass at the Cathedral and the procession of the silver statue
The Feast of the Madonna della Lettera is the primary religious celebration in Messina, the provincial capital in northeastern Sicily overlooking the Strait. It is held annually on June 3rd to honor the city's patron saint, venerated under the title of Madonna della Lettera. It is a deeply felt occasion for the Messinese community, uniting diocesan liturgical rites with civic festivities across the city.
According to tradition, in 42 AD, a delegation from Messina traveled to Jerusalem and met the Virgin Mary, who blessed them, entrusted them with a letter written in her own hand along with a lock of her hair, and promised the city her eternal protection. This legend gave rise to the title "Madonna della Lettera" (Our Lady of the Letter). The cult was formalized in the 18th century when the Virgin was named patron saint of Messina, with her feast day established on June 3rd.
The heart of the procession is the silver statue of the Madonna, a work by the Messinese sculptor Lio Gangeri, which accompanies the precious reliquary containing the Virgin's hair. Inside the Cathedral, the painting of the Madonna della Lettera is adorned with the famous Manta d'oro, a sumptuous golden mantle crafted in 1668 by the Florentine goldsmith Innocenzo Mangani.
The June 3rd festivities take place between Eucharistic celebrations in the Cathedral Basilica and the solemn Pontifical Mass at 11:00 AM. In the afternoon, following the Holy Rosary, the procession of the statue begins at 6:30 PM from Piazza Duomo, followed by thousands of faithful, hundreds of devotees dressed in white, and diocesan confraternities. The procession winds through the city center along Corso Cavour, Via Tommaso Cannizzaro, Via Garibaldi, and Via I Settembre, before returning to Piazza Duomo.
Alongside religious rites, the festival engages the entire city with music and entertainment. In recent years, the Notte Mariana (Marian Night) has become a staple, featuring music and fireworks in the square, drawing large crowds to the historic center. To ensure the smooth running of the celebrations, the Municipality implements significant traffic changes along the procession route.
Participating in the Feast of the Madonna della Lettera means immersing yourself in the soul of Messina and its province: a day where faith, history, and civic identity merge in one of the most representative manifestations of Sicilian popular and religious tradition.
The solemnity of the Madonna della Lettera 2026 in Messina reached its peak on June 3rd. At 11:00 AM, the solemn Pontifical Mass presided over by Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco was celebrated in the Cathedral Basilica.
In the afternoon, at 6:30 PM, the procession of the silver statue departed from Piazza Duomo, followed by thousands of the faithful and diocesan confraternities, moving along Corso Cavour, Via Tommaso Cannizzaro, Via Garibaldi, and Via I Settembre, before returning to Piazza Duomo.
The civic festivities were accompanied by the fourth edition of the Notte Mariana, an evening of music and fireworks from Palazzo Zanca on June 2nd and 3rd.
The festival is celebrated every year on June 3rd, the feast day of Messina's patron saint.
Celebrations take place in the Cathedral Basilica and Piazza Duomo, in the historic center of Messina. The procession follows a route along Corso Cavour, Via Tommaso Cannizzaro, Via Garibaldi, and Via I Settembre.
Messina is accessible by train (Messina Centrale station, just minutes from the Duomo), by car via the A20 Messina-Palermo and A18 Messina-Catania motorways, and by sea via the Strait ferries from Villa San Giovanni and Reggio Calabria.
Admission to the celebrations is free. On the day of the festival, the city center is subject to numerous road closures and parking bans: we recommend reaching the area on foot or by public transport.
