The August festival in the village of Casali d'Aschi in honor of the Santissimo Salvatore
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of the Giovenco Valley, on the slopes overlooking the ancient Fucino basin, the village of Casali d'Aschi โ part of the Municipality of Gioia dei Marsi, in the province of L'Aquila โ experiences one of the most heartfelt moments of its calendar in the first days of August. These are the Patronal Feasts dedicated to the Santissimo Salvatore, the town's patron saint, traditionally celebrated on August 6th, the day of the Transfiguration.
For two days, the small Marsican village gathers around its church and streets: the community, along with those returning to the village for the summer, rediscovers the roots of an ancient devotion and a popular tradition passed down from generation to generation.
The cult of the Santissimo Salvatore in Aschi has been documented for centuries: sources from the Diocesan Archive of the Marsi attest to its celebration since the 18th century, with solemn processions, the display of relics, and liturgical chants. The community of Casali d'Aschi was born in the valley as a winter settlement for the inhabitants of the ancient Aschi Alto and consolidated after the 1915 Marsica earthquake, which devastated these lands. The parish church, destroyed by the earthquake, was rebuilt and remains the fulcrum of the patronal celebrations to this day.
The heart of the festival is the procession with the statue of the Santissimo Salvatore through the streets of the village, accompanied by the community and the brass band, along with religious services in the church. Surrounding the devotional moment is the secular program, curated by the Casali d'Aschi Festival Committee: evenings in the square, music, social gatherings, and events designed for children, which bring the village to life on summer nights.
Casali d'Aschi is located in a position of great natural charm, in the Giovenco Valley, a stone's throw from the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. For many, the August festival is an opportunity to rediscover this authentic corner of the Marsica region, far from the main tourist flows, where popular faith, hospitality, and the mountain landscape intertwine in a genuine experience. The town celebrates several religious holidays throughout the year โ from the Madonna del Buon Consiglio in April to the September festival โ but the August one, linked to the patron saint, is the most attended.
