The patronal feast of the seaside village of Porto Cesareo, featuring processions, illuminations, and fireworks over the sea

Every summer, in Torre Lapillo—a seaside hamlet in the municipality of Porto Cesareo, in the province of Lecce (Puglia)—the community gathers around its patron saint, the Most Holy Mary of the Assumption. It is the village's most anticipated and deeply felt festival, an event that blends religious devotion with popular joy, attracting residents, returning emigrants, and the many tourists who flock to the Ionian coast of Salento in August.
The history of the festival is relatively recent and deeply tied to the very origins of the town. Torre Lapillo was established as a rural village in the late 1950s as part of the land reform that allocated land around the ancient coastal tower. It was then that the Assumption of Mary was chosen as the patron saint of the locality, which at the time was still part of the territory of Nardò. The first small church was built along the road to Boncore; later, on land donated by the Reform Agency, the new parish church dedicated to the Most Holy Mary of the Assumption was built, which is now the spiritual heart of the village.
The heart of the festival remains the procession that, at dusk, accompanies the statue of the Assumption through the streets of the town and toward the waterfront, with the moving participation of the faithful. The celebration is preceded and crowned by a solemn mass. The streets light up with traditional luminarie (light displays) featuring the characteristic cassarmonica (bandstand), while brass bands—historically invited from neighboring towns such as Veglie, Salice Salentino, San Donaci, Mesagne, and Squinzano—fill the squares with marches and concerts.
As per Salento tradition, the festivities conclude with a pyrotechnic display: fireworks explode over the waterfront, reflecting on the clear waters of Torre Lapillo and offering residents and vacationers one of the most evocative images of the summer. Stalls, fairs, and food stands complete the festive atmosphere along the village streets.
The dates of the festival have varied over time: from the days around August 14th and 15th, to the first Sunday after the Assumption, and even late August celebrations in recent years. In 2025, the festival took place on August 25th and 26th. To find out the updated program, it is best to follow the channels of the parish and the festival committee of Torre Lapillo.
