June 27 in Teora: blessing of the bread, procession, food festival, and dance evening in the Alta Irpinia region
In Teora, a town of just over 1,400 inhabitants in the province of Avellino, the San Vito festival always takes place on June 27, regardless of the day of the week. It is one of the events that kicks off the Teora summer and symbolically marks the start of the season in Alta Irpinia. The saint, a martyr of Sicilian origin, is traditionally invoked as the patron of dancers and those suffering from epilepsy: a dual patronage that explains why the day in Teora naturally alternates between prayer and dance.
The morning begins at 10:00 AM with Holy Mass in the Church of San Vito, followed by the blessing of the bread. This is the most iconic gesture of the day: small blessed loaves that the faithful take home to share with their families, a votive rite common in many southern communities and preserved here without interruption. Visitors will find a simple church, devoid of grand artistic displays, but rich in community memory.
In the late afternoon, at 6:00 PM, the celebration moves to Piazzale San Pio, where the second Mass of the day is officiated, followed by a procession through the town streets. This is the moment when the entire community comes together: confraternities, associations, families, and visitors accompany the statue through the houses rebuilt after the 1980 earthquake, in a path that is both devotional and civic.
Once the religious part concludes, Teora changes pace. The San Vito Festival stalls fill the air with the scent of nonna’s fusilli—fresh, hand-rolled pasta that is the gastronomic signature of Alta Irpinia—and the sausage sandwich prepared according to old-fashioned recipes. Portions are enjoyed at outdoor tables, with the affordable prices typical of local village festivals and service provided entirely by local volunteers.
The day closes with a dance evening, which over the years has featured various ballroom orchestras and local folk groups, such as «Li Strazza Liscio» or the duo Nello Desiderio and Paola. Dancing takes place in the square, with free admission, until late at night—a finale that, for a saint who is the patron of dancers, is quite fitting.
The Feast of San Vito is the first stop of «Teora R...Estate», the summer calendar promoted by the Municipality of Teora together with the Pro Loco, the Misericordia, the Festival Committee, and local associations. From late June to mid-August, the village hosts concerts, sports tournaments, charity initiatives, and other festivals: the Wine & Taranta Fest in July, the Corrida Teorese, the P'satura demonstration featuring traditional weighing and plowing, and the feasts of Sant'Emidio, San Nicola di Mira, San Gerardo Maiella, and the Assumption in mid-August. Those visiting for San Vito have a whole summer of events ahead of them.
Nestled at an altitude of 653 meters on the edge of the Ofanto valley, Teora is one of the westernmost municipalities of Alta Irpinia, in Campania. The town was almost completely destroyed by the earthquake of November 23, 1980, which claimed 157 lives—remembered by a plaque on the facade of the Church of San Vito—and was rebuilt with a new urban layout that coexists with the remains of the historic center. Festivals like this serve as a tool for continuity: they bring together those who stayed, those who emigrated and return in the summer, and visitors coming up from Avellino or nearby Basilicata for a day of authentic tradition.
The Feast of San Vito inaugurated the summer calendar of «Teora R...Estate 2026» on Saturday, June 27, 2026, which the Municipality of Teora developed in collaboration with local associations and which continued until August 16.
The official program included Holy Mass at 10:00 AM in the Church of San Vito, with the traditional blessing of the bread, and at 6:00 PM the second Holy Mass at Piazzale San Pio, followed by a procession through the town streets. In the evening, the Festival & Dance Evening took place, with food stalls managed by volunteers and free admission for dancing in the square.
After San Vito, the program continued with the Youth Sector Quadrangular on June 28, the opening of the Summer Playroom on July 1, and the Wine & Taranta Fest from July 10 to 12, leading up to the Tropical Ferragosto on August 16.
Fixed date: June 27 every year. Typical program: 10:00 AM Holy Mass and blessing of the bread at the Church of San Vito; 6:00 PM Mass at Piazzale San Pio and procession; evening festival and dancing.
By car: Take the Teora exit on the Lioni-Grottaminarda highway or from the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway (Lacedonia or Grottaminarda exit) following signs for Alta Irpinia; Teora is about 60 km from Avellino and 40 km from Lioni. By train: the reference station is Conza-Andretta-Cairano on the Avellino-Rocchetta Sant'Antonio line, with bus connections to the town. Regional AIR Campania buses connect Teora to Avellino and Naples.
Access to religious celebrations, the procession, and the dance evening is free. Festival food tastings are paid for per item, with the affordable prices typical of village festivals.
Park in the free areas at the edge of the center and walk to Piazzale San Pio. Bring a light jacket: at an altitude of 653 meters, late June evenings can be cool.
