The patronal festival of Partanna: over five centuries of faith, historical pageants, and maritime processions
The Feast of Saint Vitus the Martyr is the most cherished event in the calendar of Partanna, a town in the Belice Valley in the province of Trapani, in the heart of western Sicily. Saint Vitus has been the city's patron for over five hundred years: according to tradition, his relics have been kept and venerated here since the late 15th century, inextricably linking the cult of the young martyr to the history of the Grifeo family, lords of the town and its imposing Castle. Partanna chose Saint Vitus as its protector even before Mazara del Vallo, the saint's birthplace, testifying to an ancient and profound devotion.
Saint Vitus was a young Christian martyr of the 3rd century. According to tradition, on June 15th, 304 AD, under the Emperor Diocletian, the three martyrs—Vitus, his tutor Modestus, and his nurse Crescentia—suffered martyrdom for their faith. This is why June 15th is the fixed date around which the Partanna festival revolves every year, preceded by days of religious and popular celebrations.
The heart of the festival is the translation of the simulacrum and relics of Saint Vitus, which are carried in a solemn procession from the Mother Church, dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Most Holy Savior, to the Church of San Biagio. The days come alive with:
Delegations from Vita, Mazara del Vallo, and Campobello di Mazara—towns that also venerate Saint Vitus as their patron—traditionally participate in the festival, highlighting a spiritual and cultural bond that unites various communities in western Sicily. Between solemn liturgies, the Act of Entrustment to the Patron Saint, and moments of intense popular participation, the Partanna festival renews each year the identity of a city that weaves together faith, historical memory, and secular traditions.
Visiting Partanna during the festival is also an opportunity to discover the Grifeo Castle, one of the best-preserved fortresses in western Sicily, which houses the Museum of Prehistory of the Lower Belice, the 16th-century Mother Church with works attributed to the school of Francesco Laurana, and the flavors of a territory renowned for the Partanna red onion, the Nocellara del Belice olive oil, and the Vastedda della Valle del Belìce PDO cheese.
The 2026 Feast of Saint Vitus the Martyr in Partanna was celebrated from June 12th to 15th, with the highlight on the patron saint's day. The festival featured its most characteristic moments: the translation of the simulacrum and relics from the Mother Church to the Church of San Biagio, the historical pageant in period costumes animated by musicians, flag-wavers, and medieval drummers, the medieval village with tastings of local products, and the evocative procession with the boat of young Vitus accompanied by Modestus and Crescentia.
There were also solemn liturgies in the Mother Church, the Act of Entrustment to the Patron Saint, and the ancient Fair of Saint Vitus, which traditionally concluded the festivities, involving the entire Partanna community in the province of Trapani.
