The patronal feast of the Melia hamlet, blending devotion, ancient rituals, and rustic flavors
In the heart of the Peloritani Mountains, the Feast of Saint Sebastian is the most cherished event of the year for the hamlet of Melia, in the municipality of Mongiuffi Melia, in the province of Messina (Sicily). Saint Sebastian has been the patron of Melia since at least 1570, the year the church dedicated to him was founded, as evidenced by an ancient bell cast in Messina. The statue venerated by the community dates back to the first half of the 17th century and tells the story, through the arrows of his martyrdom, of a saint who has become a symbol of protection and collective identity.
The festivities begin with the novena, which prepares the community for the climax starting on January 11th. On the first day of the festival, in the late afternoon, the chapel is opened for the evocative mechanical descent of the statue, which is then carried in procession to the Mother Church of San Nicolò di Bari. In the evening, the square literally lights up with the ritual of the Pagghiaru, the great traditional bonfire, accompanied by the lighting of the 'cannici' and the sausage festival, featuring tastings of 'cuzzole', sausage, and wine offered to the community.
The feast day begins at dawn, around 5:30 AM, with the traditional singing of the Office of Saint Sebastian in the Mother Church. In the morning, Holy Mass precedes the solemn procession of the statue through the village streets. At noon, in the square, one of the most characteristic moments takes place: the blessing and distribution of the arrows of Saint Sebastian, arrow-shaped breads baked in a wood-fired oven that recall the Saint's martyrdom. The day concludes in the evening with the return procession, the singing of the 'Lauro', and the return of the image to the chapel.
More than just a religious festival, Saint Sebastian in Melia is a moment of reconnecting with one's roots: the people of Melia, including those who have emigrated, return to the village to gather around the timeless rituals. The fusion of popular devotion, ancient gestures like the 'Pagghiaru', and the conviviality of the table makes this festival a precious example of the popular traditions of the Messina hinterland.
A small municipality nestled among the villages of the Peloritani, Mongiuffi Melia preserves an authentic atmosphere made of mountain landscapes, ancient crafts, and genuine gastronomy. The Feast of Saint Sebastian is the ideal opportunity to discover this little-known corner of the province of Messina, just a short distance from the Ionian coast and Taormina.
The festivities for Saint Sebastian 2026 in Mongiuffi Melia, initially set for Monday, January 19th, and Tuesday, January 20th, were postponed to Saturday, January 23rd, and Sunday, January 24th due to adverse weather conditions. The novena had nevertheless begun as scheduled on January 11th.
Saturday, January 23rd: at 6:15 PM, opening of the chapel and translation of the statue to the Mother Church; at 8:00 PM, lighting of the 'cannici' and the traditional Pagghiaru, with free tasting of 'cuzzole', sausage, and wine in the square.
Sunday, January 24th: at 5:30 AM, the singing of the traditional Office; at 10:00 AM, Holy Mass followed by the procession of the Saint through the village streets; at 12:00 PM, blessing and distribution of the arrows of Saint Sebastian in the square; at 7:30 PM, evening procession and return of the image to the chapel.

Participation in religious rites and traditional tastings is free.
