The Feast of Saint Philip of Agira is one of the most cherished events in Rodì Milici, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Messina, Sicily, nestled among the hills of the Tyrrhenian hinterland. Saint Philip is venerated here as a co-patron saint, alongside Saint Bartholomew and Saint John the Baptist, and his feast falls annually on May 12th, just as the wheat begins to ripen in the fields.
The saint's statue is housed in a small chapel built in 1702 at the highest point of the town, in the district that bears his name. On the morning of May 12th, the statue is moved from the Church of Saint Philip on the hill down to the Church of the Immaculate Conception in the town center. In the evening, the procession begins from there, winding through the village streets accompanied by a brass band.
A unique detail makes this celebration particularly evocative: wheat ears are placed between the statue's fingers. This is a sign of devotion deeply connected to the rhythms of field work, a legacy of ancient rites linked to the cycle of the seasons and the harvest. Popular tradition also tells that the saint appeared to a herdsman, asking for a church to be dedicated to him on the hilltop, and the statue features dark facial features, as it is said that Saint Philip was of African origin.
At the end of the procession, fireworks light up the town sky. Before the statue returns to the church, the faithful gathered on the steps invoke the saint's protection and intercession with a traditional chant alternating with prayers: it is the most intense and participatory moment of the day, closing the feast in a spirit of community.
During the festivities, Rodì Milici hosts the Ancient Market Fair of Saint Philip, a curious and vibrant event dedicated to local produce and craftsmanship. It is the perfect opportunity to taste and purchase regional food and wine, discover local artisan goods, and, in its most traditional form, experience the livestock market organized by local farmers.
Attending the Feast of Saint Philip of Agira means connecting with the most authentic Sicily of the Messina hinterland, where popular faith intertwines with rural life and the commercial traditions of the fair. An ideal experience for those looking to discover the villages of the Peloritani mountains far from the beaten tourist paths.
