The Feast of Saint Joseph is one of the most deeply rooted devotional events in Palma di Montechiaro, a town in the province of Agrigento overlooking the southern coast of Sicily. As in many towns across the island, the March 19th commemoration is not just a liturgical feast, but a major moment of collective identity where the community gathers around the figure of the patron saint of fathers and workers.
The festival is preceded by a novena that accompanies the faithful in the days leading up to March 19th. Every evening, in the Mother Church, the Holy Rosary and the Chaplet to Saint Joseph are recited, followed by Holy Mass. Preparations also include prayer circles hosted in family homes, a custom that brings devotion into the domestic walls of the town.
The heart of the local tradition is the Tavolata di San Giuseppe (Saint Joseph's Banquet), set up at the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament. This is a votive table laden with food as a thanksgiving to the saint, an expression of an ancient rite widespread throughout Sicily and linked to the culture of bread and sharing. The banquet is blessed and opened to the faithful, who can admire it and bring their own offerings.
On the day of the feast, the historic center comes alive: the V. Bellini Musical Band parades through the town streets, followed by the Solemn Holy Mass with the blessing of the fathers. The day concludes with one of the most anticipated and symbolic moments: the sharing of the traditional Saint Joseph soup on the church steps—a vegetable and legume soup that recalls the community's rural roots and the value of hospitality.
The festivities are organized by the youth of the Maria SS. del Rosario and Sant'Antonio di Padova parishes, together with the Carlo and Giulio Tomasi Association. The religious dimension is accompanied by a charitable one: during the novena, a collection of essential food items is promoted for needy families, a concrete sign of the spirit of charity that has always accompanied the cult of Saint Joseph in Sicily.
The banquets and votive breads of March 19th have their roots in centuries-old traditions born as thanksgiving for graces received, often linked to the ancient famines and droughts that struck the island. In Palma di Montechiaro, this heritage is renewed every year, making the festival a precious opportunity to experience the popular and religious culture of the Agrigento area and the Sicily Region firsthand.
The 2026 edition of the Feast of Saint Joseph in Palma di Montechiaro does not yet have an official program. As this is a festival tied to the fixed date of March 19th, the usual devotional rites and popular traditions that characterize the local celebration are expected to take place. For updated details on times, locations, and initiatives, it is recommended to check the announcements from local parishes and the Carlo and Giulio Tomasi Association in the days leading up to the feast.
The festivities culminate on March 19th, the feast day of Saint Joseph, preceded by the novena in the days immediately prior.
