The patronal feast of Sant'Eusanio Forconese, between the Romanesque Basilica and the Aterno Valley
Every year, the village of Sant'Eusanio Forconese, a small town of a few hundred inhabitants nestled in the middle Aterno Valley, just a dozen kilometers from L'Aquila, pays tribute to its patron saint, Saint Eusanio the Martyr. Devotion to this figure is so deeply rooted that it has given the village its very name and marks the community's calendar with a dual celebration, following an ancient local custom.
The unique feature of this feast is that the patron saint is celebrated twice a year. The civil festival takes place on the second Sunday of May, while the religious feast falls on July 9th, the liturgical date commemorating the saint's martyrdom. According to tradition, Saint Eusanio, a missionary who arrived from Puglia, died on July 9th in the year 300 after enduring imprisonment and torture for his preaching in the lands of ancient Forcona.
A evocative tale accompanies the memory of the saint. It is said that some faithful followers arrived from his native Puglia with an ox-drawn cart to bring the martyr's remains home; however, when the relics were loaded, the oxen knelt and refused to move. The body thus remained in Sant'Eusanio, and even today, two oxen carved into the stone of the basilica's portal commemorate that miracle. The relics have been kept for centuries in the sanctuary's crypt.
The centerpiece of the celebrations is the Basilica of Saint Eusanio the Martyr, one of the rare examples of a fortified church in Italy. Rebuilt in Romanesque style in 1198 following the earthquakes that have marked the territory over the centuries, it preserves a stone portal, a crypt divided into small naves, Renaissance frescoes brought to light during the 1971 restoration, and a historic 18th-century organ. It is here that the processions and rites that animate the patronal feast are concentrated.
Beyond its religious dimension, the feast has always held a strong popular and communal character: processions, social gatherings, and, in the past, a well-attended fair that served as an occasion for meeting and trade, featuring the sale of wooden and woven reed artifacts, a testament to local craftsmanship. For this village in the Aterno Valley, in the province of L'Aquila and in the heart of Abruzzo, the Feast of Saint Eusanio remains an identity-defining event that keeps the bond alive between the inhabitants, their history, and the saint who guards their name.
The 2026 Feast of Saint Eusanio the Martyr confirms the tradition of the double celebration of the patron saint of Sant'Eusanio Forconese: the civil festival on the second Sunday of May and the religious feast on July 9, the liturgical date of the saint's martyrdom. The heart of the celebrations remains the Romanesque Basilica that houses the relics in the crypt. The detailed program with times and events will be released by the Municipality and the parish in the days preceding the feast.
