In the heart of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, perched at an altitude of 1,250 meters, the village of Santo Stefano di Sessanio, in the province of L'Aquila, is one of the most evocative medieval villages in Abruzzo. Every summer, the small community gathers for its patronal feast, dedicated to Saint Stephen the Protomartyr, the first Christian martyr and the village's patron saint, and Saint Isidore, protector of farmers and the countryside. The festivities traditionally take place in the first days of August, bringing life to the paved streets and limestone houses that make this corner of the Apennines unique.
The heart of the celebration remains deeply religious: holy masses and a solemn procession wind through the historic center, passing through alleys, arches, and stairways, up to the square dominated by the striking Medici Tower, a symbol of the town erected in the 16th century by the Medici, lords of these lands alongside the Barony of Carapelle. Popular devotion intertwines with the identity of a mountain community that has managed to preserve its rites and flavors over the centuries.
The patronal feast is also an occasion for convivial sharing. Tradition dictates that during these days, typical dishes of Abruzzese peasant cuisine are prepared, linked to the products of the land and in particular to the famous Santo Stefano di Sessanio lentil, a Slow Food Presidium grown on the plateaus at the foot of the Gran Sasso and documented since ancient times. Soups, stews, and traditional first courses accompany the festive moments, amidst long tables and gatherings that strengthen the community bond.
Santo Stefano di Sessanio stands on the ruins of the ancient Roman settlement of Sextantio and reached its peak under the lordship of the Medici, who turned it into a thriving center for the production and trade of carfagna wool. Walking through the village during the patronal feast means immersing yourself in a timeless atmosphere, between the Medici entrance gate, the ancient workshops, and the panoramas that stretch over the Campo Imperatore plain. The feast represents one of the most authentic moments to discover the Terra delle Baronie and the soul of this Alto Aterno territory.
The patronal feast is part of a rich summer calendar that enlivens Santo Stefano di Sessanio, including the Estate nel Borgo festival, classical music concerts by the Officina Musicale, and, in September, the renowned Lentil Festival. Together, these appointments make the small Abruzzese town an ideal destination for those seeking authenticity, nature, and tradition in the heart of the Gran Sasso.
