The patronal festival of Vairano Patenora, blending faith, brass bands, and fireworks
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Saint Bartholomew the Apostle, martyr and disciple of Jesus, is the patron saint of Vairano Patenora, a town in the Alto Casertano region with just under seven thousand inhabitants. Nestled at the foot of its medieval village in the province of Caserta, in the heart of inland Campania, the town celebrates him on August 24th. For generations, this date has marked the end of the Vairano summer: it is a time when the town fills with relatives returning for the occasion, fairy lights adorn the alleys, and that unique mix of devotion and joy typical of Southern Italian patronal festivals takes hold.
The liturgical program is managed by the Saint Bartholomew the Apostle Parish and local confraternities, who prepare for the festivities with great dedication and the concrete support of the community. The preparation includes the novena, with evening celebrations leading up to the feast, and moments of Eucharistic adoration.
On the feast day, a high mass is celebrated in the presence of civil and religious authorities, followed by the procession of the statue of Saint Bartholomew through the streets of the town, accompanied by a brass band—perhaps the most iconic image of the day. The statue is displayed on the Tosello, a canopy richly decorated with drapes, created thanks to fundraising efforts by the parish community: a detail that perfectly illustrates how the festival is a collective work, built dinner after dinner and donation after donation.
Alongside the religious program, the festival has always offered a rich secular calendar that enlivens the town squares for several consecutive evenings:
In recent years, the patron saint's name has inspired a new and highly popular event: the Contrada Games — Saint Bartholomew Trophy, two evenings of challenges between the town's districts, hosted in Piazza Garibaldi and organized by the RH+ Cinema e Teatro association together with Storia Nova APS. The stated goal is to rediscover a sense of belonging and revive the spirit of the ancient districts through games, skill tests, and strategy, in a festive atmosphere that engages both adults and children. The games precede the patronal feast by a few days, serving as a secular prologue.
The historic festivities in honor of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle are part of the Vairano Summer program, promoted by the Municipality in collaboration with local associations. This series of events spans several months, offering music, shows, sports, food and wine, religious festivals, and activities for children across Vairano Patenora, the hamlet of Vairano Scalo, and the village of Marzanello. August is the busiest month: during the same period, the historic center also hosts the famous Medieval Festival, which transforms the village into a medieval setting with tournaments, flag-wavers, and ancient flavors.
Visitors arriving for the festival will find much more than just an evening of music. Vairano Patenora preserves one of the most recognizable medieval villages in the area, dominated by a castle renovated in the 16th century by the d'Avalos family. It also guards the memory of the Taverna della Catena, the site where Giuseppe Garibaldi and Victor Emmanuel II met during the events that led to the unification of Italy. The territory, part of the Cities of Hazelnut association, is perfect for a slow visit through the countryside, Roman ruins, and the flavors of the Caserta hinterland: the patronal festival is the best opportunity to experience it when the community is at its most vibrant.
The Feast of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle is confirmed as part of the 2026 Vairano Summer, the program that distributes events across several months in Vairano Patenora, Vairano Scalo, and the village of Marzanello, covering culture, music, sports, food and wine, and religious festivals. During the same month of August, the historic center also hosts the Medieval Festival.
The patron saint is celebrated on August 24th and, as is customary, the festivities span several days, including a novena, high mass, a statue procession accompanied by a brass band, and evening musical performances in the square, culminating in a fireworks display. At the moment, however, no official program with definitive dates and times has been published: information will be updated as soon as the Saint Bartholomew the Apostle Parish and the Municipality release the official poster for the 2026 edition.
The summer calendar also includes the Saint Bartholomew Trophy — Contrada Games, two evenings of challenges between the districts in Piazza Garibaldi, organized by RH+ Cinema e Teatro with Storia Nova APS, which have preceded the patronal feast in recent seasons.
Vairano Patenora is located in the Alto Casertano, about 35 km northwest of Caserta and sixty kilometers from Naples. By train, get off at the Vairano-Caianello station in the Vairano Scalo hamlet, which is connected to the historic center. By car, the town can be reached via the main roads of the Alto Casertano; during the festival, it is advisable to leave your car in the parking areas on the outskirts of the center, as the village streets are occupied by the procession and stalls.
Religious celebrations, the procession, and the shows in the square are free to attend. Only food at the stalls and purchases at the markets require payment.
Late August evenings in Campania are mild, but the village is slightly elevated, so a light sweater may be useful. For the procession and the fireworks, it is advisable to arrive a little early to secure a good spot. The final schedule and program are released each year through the channels of the Saint Bartholomew the Apostle Parish and the Municipality of Vairano Patenora: it is always a good idea to check them before traveling.
