The blessing of the animals in the heart of the Nebrodi mountains

The Feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot in Alcara li Fusi, a small village perched in the heart of the Nebrodi Mountains in the Province of Messina (Sicily), is one of the most cherished events in the local winter calendar. Saint Anthony the Abbot, venerated throughout Italy as the patron saint of animals, is celebrated around January 17th, the day dedicated to him, with a celebration that intertwines faith, rural life, and affection for animals.
The central moment of the festival is the blessing of the animals, which takes place on the parvis of the Parish Church of Maria SS. Assunta at the end of Holy Mass. Here, the local community gathers in large numbers, each accompanied by their own animal: you will see horses, sheep, cows, birds, rabbits, cats, and dogs together, in a scene that captures the rural and pastoral soul of this corner of the Nebrodi better than words ever could.
The blessing is imparted by the parish priest, and in recent editions, it has been officiated by Father Maurizio, who recently joined the community. It is a simple yet profound gesture that renews, year after year, the bond between people and the animals that share their daily work in the fields, their companionship, and mutual care.
For several years, the organization of the blessing has been managed by the Cavalieri del Calanna Association, which keeps this tradition alive and oversees every detail. Their dedication transforms the festival into an occasion for the whole town to meet, but also into an educational moment: children are taught the value of respect and protection for animals, remembering how important they are in human life.
More than just a spectacle, the Feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot in Alcara li Fusi is a communal rite that unites generations and strengthens the delicate bond between humans and animals, in full harmony with the spirit of the hermit saint who protects the herds.
Official dates and the program for the 2026 edition of the Feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot in Alcara li Fusi are not yet available. As this is an annual religious event tied to January 17th, the feast day of Saint Anthony the Abbot, it is likely that the community will gather around this date in 2026 for the customary blessing of the animals on the parvis of the Parish Church of Maria SS. Assunta. We recommend checking the parish and Cavalieri del Calanna Association channels closer to the event for final dates and times.

By car: from Messina or Palermo, take the A20 motorway (exit at Sant'Agata di Militello or Brolo), then head inland following signs for Alcara li Fusi. The village is located in a mountainous area: expect narrow roads and hairpin bends. The nearest train station is in Sant'Agata di Militello, on the Tyrrhenian line.
The event is celebrated around January 17th, the feast day of Saint Anthony the Abbot; in recent editions, the blessing has been held on the Sunday closest to that date.
Participation is free.
A winter mountain event: dress warmly to suit the cold weather. It is a very popular appointment for animal owners, who are welcome to bring their pets for the blessing.
