The patronal feast of Mignano Monte Lungo, held every June 13th in the upper Caserta region

In Mignano Monte Lungo, a town of just under three thousand inhabitants in the province of Caserta, at the northern tip of Campania, the patron saint is Saint Anthony of Padua. His feast day falls every year on June 13th, a fixed date on the liturgical calendar, and is the day the town celebrates its most important festival. As in much of Southern Italy, the patronal feast is not just a religious appointment: it is the moment when the community reaffirms its bonds, when Mignano natives living elsewhere return home, and families reunite.
Saint Anthony of Padua is one of Italy's most venerated saints: the Portuguese friar, who died in Padua in 1231, is invoked as the protector of the poor, travelers, and those searching for lost items. Antonian devotion spans the entire peninsula, and in hundreds of towns, it is expressed through the June 13th feast. In Mignano Monte Lungo, this devotion has left a tangible mark on the town's main place of worship.
The religious heart of the village is the church of Santa Maria Grande (also known as Santa Maria la Grande), built starting in the 16th century and characterized by an unusual Greek cross floor plan. Construction lasted for centuries, slowed by a lack of funds, and the building was only consecrated in 1930. Inside, one finds the chapel of the Most Holy Rosary, completed in 1907, and the chapel dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua, finished in 1910. The church preserves 17th and 18th-century Neapolitan school statues and a bell from 1510. Two seismic events, in the 1970s and 1984, necessitated major restorations. The Confraternity of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary has been linked to the liturgical life of the church for centuries.
Mignano Monte Lungo sits at about 140 meters above sea level, in a border territory between the province of Caserta and lower Lazio, about seventy kilometers northwest of Naples. The municipality includes the hamlets and localities of Caspoli, Campozillone, Casa La Selva, Moscuso, and Passaggio Verona. The medieval castle, rebuilt by the Fieramosca family, and Porta Fratte, the only surviving remnant of the ancient city walls, overlook the town. It was right here, in 1139, that the troops of Roger II of Sicily surprised the army of Pope Innocent II: that episode gave rise to the famous Treaty of Mignano.
The town's name recalls Monte Lungo, the hill that in December 1943 was the scene of the first military action fought by Italian units deployed alongside the Allies: the height was captured on December 16, 1943, as part of the Battle of San Pietro Infine. The military memorial that preserves its memory is today one of the most visited sites in the area and is worth a stop for those arriving in town for the patronal feast.
On June 13th, the day revolves around celebrations in honor of the patron saint at the parish church. For the most recent editions, it has not been possible to find a detailed program released by the organizers: mass times, any processions, and evening civil events are not documented by official sources available online. Those wishing to participate should check directly with the parish or the Municipality of Mignano Monte Lungo offices.
The Feast of Saint Anthony is also a good excuse to explore this lesser-known corner of Campania: the villages of the upper Caserta area, the medieval castles of the zone, and the hilly landscape that offers bright days and mild evenings in June. The province of Caserta is known primarily for the Royal Palace and Casertavecchia, but its northern hinterland preserves a rural and authentic character that local patronal feasts convey better than any tourist guide.
The Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua, patron saint of Mignano Monte Lungo (province of Caserta, Campania), fell in 2026 on Saturday, June 13th, as dictated by the liturgical calendar which fixes the memory of the Saint on that day.
The anniversary is noted in the main calendars of festivals and fairs in Campania, which indicate June 13th as the patronal day of Mignano Monte Lungo. However, as of the date of writing this entry, no announcements, posters, or detailed programs published by the Municipality, the parish, or a festival committee were found: the events section of the institutional website did not report content related to the patronal feast.
The feast has its reference point in the parish church of Santa Maria Grande, which houses a chapel dedicated to Saint Anthony completed in 1910. As in all patronal feasts in Southern Italy, June 13th is the day when the community gathers and when many Mignano natives living elsewhere return to the village.
Since the 2026 program is not documented by official sources, those wishing to participate in a future edition should contact the parish of Mignano Monte Lungo or the municipal offices directly to learn about times and events.

The most practical way is by car: the town is located in the hinterland of the upper Caserta region, along the route connecting the Campanian plain to lower Lazio, about 70 km northwest of Naples and not far from the A1 Rome-Naples motorway. The historic center is compact and easily explored on foot.
Patronal feasts take place in the church and public spaces of the town: access is free and open to all.
Since the detailed program is not published online, it is advisable to contact the parish or the Municipality in advance to find out the times of the celebrations. Nearby, the military memorial of Monte Lungo and the nearby village-museum of San Pietro Infine are worth a visit.
