Saint Anthony of Padua is the patron saint of Melissano, a town of nearly seven thousand inhabitants in lower Salento, in the province of Lecce, Puglia. The saint's liturgical memorial falls every year on June 13th, a fixed date in the calendar, and it is on this day that the town experiences its first celebration dedicated to its protector, ahead of the major popular patronal feast traditionally held in early September.

The first illuminations of the Salento summer

In Salento, it is said that summer does not begin on June 21st, but on the 13th, with the feast of Saint Anthony. Melissano is one of the symbolic towns for this transition: along with Tricase and Soleto, the first true illuminations of the season are lit here on June 13th—monumental architectural light displays that smell “of burnt wood and cotton candy.” This image officially opens the long calendar of festivals and patronal feasts that will enliven lower Salento until September.

Devotion and popular tradition
