A Marian festival in the heart of the Iblei Mountains

The Feast of Maria SS. delle Grazie is one of the most deeply rooted religious celebrations in Buccheri, a small mountain town in the province of Syracuse perched over 800 meters high in the Iblei Mountains of Sicily. Every year, on the first Sunday of September, the entire community gathers around the statue of the Madonna delle Grazie for a festival that weaves together popular devotion, tradition, and the village's unique identity.

The sanctuary in the pine forest

The heart of the festival is the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie, an ancient church located outside the town center on the road toward Vizzini, nestled in a picturesque forest of oaks and chestnut trees. The building, already mentioned in 15th and 16th-century documents, was rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake that devastated southeastern Sicily; its interior preserves stucco work created in 1774 by Nicolao Cultrera of Avola. Throughout the year, the sanctuary is a destination for the faithful and those seeking a peaceful retreat on the outskirts of the village.

The procession and the confreres in blue mozzettas

For the festival, the statue of the Madonna is transferred from the sanctuary to the Mother Church of Buccheri, where it remains on display for the veneration of the faithful until the day of the Octave. The most anticipated moment is the shoulder-borne procession through the streets of the historic center: the statue is accompanied by confreres in blue mozzettas and a crowd of devotees, amidst prayers, brass band music, and the intimate atmosphere typical of Iblei town festivals.

The Octave and the torchlight procession

The celebration does not end on the Sunday of the festival: it continues in the following days with religious services, culminating in the return of the statue to the sanctuary on the day of the Octave, accompanied by a characteristic evening torchlight procession that winds through the town up to the pine forest. It is a deeply evocative moment, where the glow of the torches blends with the mountain landscape.
