Two days of devotion, processions, and music in the village of Piedimonte, in the Vallo di Diano
The Feast in Honor of the Madonna delle Grazie is the most cherished event of the year for Piedimonte, a small village in the municipality of Teggiano, in the province of Salerno, located in the heart of the Vallo di Diano (Campania). It is celebrated at the beginning of July, when the Marian devotion that runs throughout the Cilento and Vallo di Diano regions—the traditional feast of the Madonna delle Grazie falls on July 2nd—finds its most intense expression here: two days during which the community, emigrants returning for the occasion, and visitors from neighboring towns gather around the same sacred image.
The spiritual center of the festival is the small Church of the Madonna delle Grazie in Piedimonte, nestled at the foot of Mount Cila. During maintenance and safety work on the right wing of the building, frescoes dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries were uncovered, featuring two female figures that are still being studied. The discovery, reported by the parish priest Father Michele Totaro to the cultural heritage office of the Diocese of Teggiano-Policastro and the Superintendency of Salerno, has refocused attention on a place of worship documented for centuries and has given new value to a devotion that has never been interrupted here.
The program opens with liturgical celebrations: holy masses mark the two days, culminating in the procession that accompanies the statue of the Madonna delle Grazie through the streets of the village, amidst decorations, illuminations, and balconies prepared for the occasion. It is the moment when the Piedimonte community comes together, with pallbearers, faithful in prayer, and the band leading the parade.
For years, the religious aspect has been accompanied by a carefully curated secular program: stands, convivial moments, and above all, a free evening concert that has made the Piedimonte festival one of the most anticipated musical events in the Vallo di Diano. The artistic direction is entrusted to Ponzo Concerti by Umberto Ponzo, in collaboration with ColorSound, Assoconcerti, PM, and Wwaver. In 2025, the stage hosted Neapolitan singer Franco Ricciardi before a massive crowd; in 2026, it was the turn of Gemelli Diversi, a historic group of the Italian pop-rap scene, who performed on July 9th at 9:30 PM.
Behind the festivities is the Madonna delle Grazie Festival Committee, representing the Madonna delle Grazie Association of Piedimonte, which works year-round with the support of the village families. The same association organizes the «Piedimonte in Festa» event at the end of July—four evenings of folk music and conviviality, which reached its ninth edition in 2026—the proceeds of which are entirely dedicated to supporting the celebrations in honor of the Madonna delle Grazie. These are two distinct events, but linked by the same thread: the patronal feast in July and the August festival that funds it.
Teggiano, the ancient Diano, is one of the most beautiful villages in the Vallo di Diano: a perched medieval historic center that preserves the Macchiaroli Castle, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore, and a dense network of churches and stone portals. Its villages—Piedimonte among them—maintain a calendar of popular festivals that spans the entire summer, including food festivals, historical re-enactments, and religious commemorations. Participating in the Feast of the Madonna delle Grazie means coming into contact with the most authentic inland Campania, that of towns living by community, home-cooked food, and a sense of belonging.
In 2026, the village of Piedimonte di Teggiano, in the Vallo di Diano (province of Salerno), celebrated its Madonna delle Grazie on July 8th and 9th. As per tradition, the program combined the liturgical part—holy masses and a procession with the image of the Virgin through the streets of the village—with community events and evenings in the square, amidst illuminations and stands.
The musical highlight was the concert by Gemelli Diversi, on the stage set up in Piedimonte on Thursday, July 9th at 9:30 PM. The group, known for the tracks that marked the Italian pop-rap scene between the late nineties and the early two-thousands, was hosted thanks to the artistic direction of Ponzo Concerti together with ColorSound, Assoconcerti, PM, and Wwaver. A free-entry event that drew audiences from all over the Vallo di Diano, confirming the Piedimonte festival as one of the most attended evenings of the Teggiano summer.
The times of religious celebrations are communicated year by year by the parish and the festival committee.
By car: from the A2 Mediterranean Motorway, take the exit for Sala Consilina or Padula-Buonabitacolo, then continue along the SS19 delle Calabrie road to Teggiano and then towards the village of Piedimonte. By train: the nearest stations are Sapri or Sicignano-Buccino, both at a distance; road transport remains the most practical solution. By plane: Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi or Naples Capodichino airport, then motorway.
Religious celebrations and evening events do not require tickets: the patronal festival concerts take place outdoors and are open to everyone. The festivities are supported by the offerings of the faithful and the proceeds from the evenings organized by the association.
For evenings with large crowds, the Municipality of Teggiano issues a mayoral ordinance prohibiting the sale for takeaway and the use of glass bottles and metal cans in the areas affected by the concert, generally from 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM the following day.
Teggiano and the neighboring towns of the Vallo di Diano (Sala Consilina, Padula, Sassano) offer B&Bs, farmhouses, and small hotels. Advance booking is recommended during the festival days.
