About Saint Michael the Archangel in Procida

Every May 8th, the island of Procida gathers around Saint Michael the Archangel, its patron and protector, to commemorate the 1535 miracle that tradition says saved the inhabitants from a Saracen pirate raid. From the Terra Murata Abbey, the gold and silver statue of the Archangel is carried in procession on the shoulders of the confreres known as the "Gialli," amidst flags, festive bells, and firecrackers, winding through the streets of the village, Corricella, and Chiaiolella. A second procession takes place on September 29th, the liturgical feast of the Archangels.

The patronal feast of Procida island

The Feast and Procession of Saint Michael the Archangel is the most deeply felt religious event in the Municipality of Procida, in the province of Naples, Campania. Saint Michael the Archangel is the island's patron and protector: his most popular celebration falls on May 8th, the canonical date of the 1535 apparition, and is repeated on September 29th, the liturgical feast of the Archangels. On both occasions, the small island in the Gulf of Naples comes to a standstill to gather around its most venerated image.

The miracle of 1535

Procida's devotion stems from an event that tradition places in 1535. According to the account handed down by Father Nicola Ricci, the corsair Barbarossa appeared off the coast of Procida with a large fleet, and his men were already at the gates of Terra Murata, the fortified village overlooking the island. The terrified inhabitants invoked Saint Michael: the entire Terra Murata then appeared surrounded by fire and lightning, and the corsairs fled in fear. Since that day, the Archangel has been considered the island's defender, and the May 8th feast is also known as the Feast of the Patronage.

The Abbey of Saint Michael the Archangel at Terra Murata

The heart of the feast is the Abbey of Saint Michael the Archangel, a Benedictine complex with origins dating back to the 11th century: a parchment from 1026, kept in the State Archives of Naples, mentions Abbot Leone as the monastery's first abbot, while the building's current appearance is largely from the 16th century. Inside, visitors can explore the church, a permanent nativity scene with 18th-century Neapolitan figurines, and a historical library with volumes dating back to 1534. The gold and silver statue of the Archangel, crafted in 1727 by the Avellino brothers and covered in ex-votos donated by the people of Procida over the centuries, is kept here.

The procession of the "Gialli" confreres

On the afternoon of May 8th, following the solemn mass, the statue is carried on the shoulders of the members of the Confraternity of Saint Michael the Archangel, known as the "Gialli" (the Yellows) for the color of the mozzetta they wear; the association was founded in the late 19th century by Father Nicola Ricci and still organizes the patronal festivities today. The clergy, the marching band, and the faithful—both locals and visitors—follow behind the statue.

  • The procession winds through the island's main streets, reaching Marina Corricella and Chiaiolella
  • Flags, festive bells, and the sound of firecrackers accompany the statue's passage
  • Houses and balconies are decorated with flowers and lights along the entire route
  • On May 8th, descendants of the Procidan emigrants who moved to Mers El Kébir in the 19th century and now live mostly around Marseille return to Procida

September 29th and the blessing of the island

The second celebration, on September 29th, is more intimate: the procession remains within Terra Murata, traveling from the church to the ancient windmill in Piazza d'Armi, the site traditionally identified as the scene of the 1535 apparition. From the Cannoni viewpoint, overlooking the sea, a collective blessing is then bestowed upon the entire island.

An identity ritual in the Gulf of Naples

More than just a patronal feast, the Saint Michael celebration is a rite of identity that blends spirituality, historical memory, and popular sentiment, showcasing the deep bond between the people of Procida and their celestial protector. Those arriving on the island during these days will find a village in celebration, with views of the Gulf of Naples from the walls of Terra Murata and the chance to discover one of the oldest monastic complexes in Campania. In 2026, the celebrations were included in the Abbey's Millennium Year, marking one thousand years since the 1026 parchment.

Saint Michael the Archangel in Procida — edition 2026

In 2026, the Millennium Year of the Abbey of Saint Michael the Archangel, the calendar for Procida's patronal feast was exceptionally modified: on Saturday, May 9th, the procession departed from the Terra Murata Abbey to reach Chiaiolella, where the Archangel's statue remained for the evening; on Sunday, May 10th, a sea procession took place around the island, with a landing at Marina Grande and a return procession to the Abbey.

The 2026 edition of the Saint Michael the Archangel feast in Procida was marked by the Abbey's Millennium Year, officially opened on Saturday, February 14, 2026, with a solemn mass presided over by Monsignor Michele Autuoro, auxiliary bishop of Naples and a native of the island. The millennium takes as its reference the 1026 parchment kept in the State Archives of Naples, which attests to Abbot Leone as the monastery's first abbot.

For the occasion, and in conjunction with the presence of Pope Leo XIV in Naples, the usual May 8th calendar was exceptionally reorganized over two days. Saturday, May 9th, the procession followed a route from the Terra Murata Abbey to Chiaiolella, at the southern end of the island, where the Archangel's statue remained for the evening.

Sunday, May 10th, featured the most spectacular moment: the sea procession around the island, culminating in the landing at Marina Grande and the return procession to the Terra Murata Abbey. The parish invited all island entities to propose liturgical, cultural, and educational initiatives for the entire jubilee year, to be coordinated by May 1, 2026.
