A weekend to rediscover the hidden treasures of Verdi's city
The FAI Spring Days are the major public event with which the FAI - Fondo per l'Ambiente Italiano has invited Italians, since 1993, to reclaim the cultural and landscape heritage of their territories. Also in Busseto, a small and refined city in the province of Parma and in Emilia-Romagna, the event returns every year on the first weekend of spring, opening the doors of places usually closed or little known.
The Busseto route winds along Via Roma, the monumental axis of the center, and includes three fascinating stops:
The heart of the initiative are the Apprentice Ciceros: students from secondary schools in the area, trained by the FAI to welcome and accompany visitors, telling the history, art, and traditions of each site. They are joined by volunteers from FAI Delegations and Groups, who animate hundreds of Italian cities every year.
Visiting Busseto during the FAI Days also means immersing yourself in the places of Giuseppe Verdi, who took his first steps in his career right here. The extraordinary openings offer an intimate glimpse into the town that served as the backdrop for the formation of the great composer, ideally completing the Verdi itinerary of the Verdi Theater and Casa Barezzi.
Admission to all sites is by free contribution: an optional donation that supports FAI's conservation and enhancement activities. FAI members and those who choose to join during the event enjoy priority access and dedicated openings. The FAI Spring Days are part of a national event that involves hundreds of cities across Italy and dozens of sites in Emilia-Romagna every year.
The thirty-fourth edition of the FAI Spring Days was held on the weekend of March 21 and 22, 2026, with 780 sites open in 400 cities across Italy and 53 extraordinary openings in Emilia-Romagna, spread across the provinces of Piacenza, Parma, Reggio Emilia, Modena, Bologna, Ferrara, Ravenna, and Forlì-Cesena.
In Busseto, in the province of Parma, three historic center sites along Via Roma were opened: the Church of Sant'Ignazio, the Library of the Monte di Pietà and Jesuit Fund, and Palazzo Corbellini. The event saw a large influx of visitors, with the rediscovery of unpublished works attributed to the Cremonese painter Luigi Strina. Nationally, the campaign mobilized approximately 7,500 FAI volunteers and 17,000 Apprentice Ciceros.
