Great symphonic music in the spirit of Arturo Toscanini, from Parma to Busseto
The Toscanini Festival is the summer event series of the Fondazione Arturo Toscanini, the Parma-based institution that preserves and promotes the legacy of the great conductor. For about a month, between June and July, the festival transforms Parma and various locations in its province into open-air stages for symphonic and chamber concerts, and special projects, performed by the Toscanini Philharmonic and internationally renowned guests.
Among the festival venues, Busseto holds a special place. We are in the Bassa Parmense, in the Province of Parma, in what is universally known as Giuseppe Verdi's homeland: a landscape of countryside, castles, and historic villas that serves as a natural backdrop for the music. The Busseto evening takes place in the park of Villa Pallavicino, a historic residence overlooking the town center, in an intimate and evocative setting where music resonates under the summer sky.
The artistic heart of the festival is the Toscanini Philharmonic, one of Italy's most recognized symphonic ensembles. Established conductors and emerging talents alternate on the podium, while the program pairs the great names of the symphonic repertoire with renowned soloists. The programs are designed to be accessible and engaging, capable of speaking to both expert audiences and families and tourists who choose Verdi's lands for their summer holidays.
The Toscanini Festival is also an invitation to discover Emilia-Romagna through its places: each concert is an opportunity to visit villages, villas, and castles that might otherwise be overlooked by major tourist routes. In Busseto, music intertwines with Verdi's history, with the gastronomy of the Bassa (culatello, parmigiano, Colli wines), and with the hospitality of a territory proud of its cultural roots.
The 2026 edition of the Toscanini Festival runs from June 21 to July 16 between Parma and its province. The Busseto stop is scheduled for Friday, June 26, 2026, at 9:30 PM, in the park of Villa Pallavicino.
The evening, titled "Heroes, Atmospheres, Illuminations", features the Toscanini Philharmonic conducted by Oleg Caetani and soloist Virgile Barthe on guitar, in a program that pairs the works of Ludwig van Beethoven with those of Joaquín Rodrigo. The same program is also presented in Parma, in Piazza San Francesco, on June 25.
Toscanini Philharmonic
Conductor: Oleg Caetani
Guitar: Virgile Barthe
Featuring music by Ludwig van Beethoven and Joaquín Rodrigo, in a juxtaposition of Beethoven's symphonic heroism and the Mediterranean color of the Spanish guitar.
The same program is offered on June 25 in Piazza San Francesco in Parma.
By Car: Busseto can be reached from the A1 motorway (Fidenza exit) or the A21, continuing towards the Bassa Parmense; Villa Pallavicino is located in the town center. By Train: Busseto station is served by the regional Parma–Cremona/Fidenza line; the center is a short walk from the station.
Tickets can be purchased online on the official platform ticket.latoscanini.it and at the Fondazione Toscanini ticket office (tel. 0521 391339, [email protected]). Season ticket holders are offered a priority purchase with a special discount.
As it is an open-air evening concert, it is advisable to bring a light layer for the evening and arrive a bit early. A visit to Busseto can be combined with the Verdi sites (Teatro Verdi, Casa Barezzi) and the typical gastronomy of the Bassa Parmense.
