The village of Capriana unveils its hidden treasures with FAI
The FAI Spring Days are the major national event through which the FAI - National Trust for Italy opens up usually inaccessible or little-known sites of the country's historical, artistic, and natural heritage to the public for an entire weekend. In Capriana, a small municipality in the Autonomous Province of Trento nestled between the Val di Fiemme and the Val di Cembra, the event is managed by the volunteers of the FAI Valle di Fiemme and Fassa Group, who guide visitors through an authentic village characterized by a distinctive cluster of farmsteads and narrow, picturesque streets.
The heart of the visit is the Church of Santi Bartolomeo e Lazzaro, located in the town center, next to which one can admire the shrine painted by Paolo Vallorz, a Trentino artist of international renown. Walking through the village streets, the guides recount the history of Capriana and the daily life of a mountain community, amidst farming traditions, rural architecture, and popular devotion.
A fascinating chapter is dedicated to the Blessed Meneghina, also known as Maria Domenica Lazzeri (1815-1848), a figure of great local devotion. Her story is illustrated in the family mill, which can be reached via a short, twenty-minute walk from the town center along a beautiful path. It is a route that connects the religious memory of the area with the material testimony of past labor.
The experience is completed by a nature and geology excursion: an 8 km loop trek with a 300-meter elevation gain, during which an expert explains the territory from an environmental and geological perspective. The route follows the Via Nova, an ancient paved road that was long the only connection to the village, offering stunning views of the local alpine landscape.
As with all FAI Spring Days, guided tours in the village of Capriana are available for a voluntary contribution, with a suggested donation to support FAI's activities. The event is a precious opportunity to rediscover the widespread heritage of the Val di Fiemme and the entire Trentino-Alto Adige region, highlighting small towns far from major tourist circuits.
On Saturday, March 21 and Sunday, March 22, 2026, the FAI Valle di Fiemme and Fassa Group proposed three different itineraries to discover Capriana, with a meeting point at the FAI desk in Piazza Roma 26.
A weekend of extraordinary opening of the Val di Fiemme's heritage, made possible by FAI volunteers.
Capriana can be reached by car from the Val di Cembra or the Val di Fiemme; the meeting point for tours is the FAI desk in Piazza Roma 26, in the town center. The reference railway station is the Valsugana/Val di Fiemme line, with connections via local bus.
Guided tours of the village and the church are available for a voluntary contribution. The excursion along the Via Nova requires a specific contribution, with a reduced rate for FAI members. Appropriate clothing and hiking footwear are recommended for the nature walk.
Details and updates are available on the official website www.giornatefai.it and through the FAI Valle di Fiemme and Fassa Group ([email protected]).
