The non-competitive snowshoe hike at Pian del Frais, blending sport, inclusion, and Alpine history
The "Fagiolo di Legno" inclusive snowshoe hike is one of the most beloved winter events in the Pian del Frais area, the snowy basin overlooking Chiomonte in the upper Susa Valley (Metropolitan City of Turin, Piedmont). This is not a race, but a non-competitive snowshoe walk open to participants of all ages and fitness levels: families, groups of friends, and mountain enthusiasts gather to share a day in the open air among the snow-covered woods and pastures of the Cottian Alps.
The event offers two itineraries of varying length and difficulty, mapped out in collaboration with the Chiomonte Sport Academy ASD:
Halfway through the walk, participants reach one of the most fascinating sites in the valley: the Gran Pertus, the extraordinary 433-meter-long hydraulic tunnel carved into the rock between 1526 and 1533 by Colombano Romean to bring water from the Clarea Valley to Chiomonte. A cultural stop that turns the snowshoe hike into a journey through nature and Alpine history.
The event has a strong inclusive spirit: designed to welcome anyone wishing to experience the winter mountains, it also serves as a tribute to the memory of Gianfranco Romussi, a symbolic figure of the Susa Valley and the creator of the hike in 2009, who passed away in 2020. Over the years, the event has become a cult classic for mountain enthusiasts in the Susa Valley.
At the end of the walk, participants can conclude the day with the convivial "Fagiolo di Legno" menu, served by reservation at local venues in Pian del Frais. The snowshoe hike also represents the first event in the cycle dedicated to the Gran Pertus, organized by APS Pro Frais with the patronage of the Municipality of Chiomonte and the collaboration of the Chiomonte Sport Academy.
L'edizione 2026 della racchettata "Fagiolo di Legno" si è tenuta sabato 28 febbraio 2026 sulle montagne di Chiomonte, al Pian del Frais.
