The Pro Loco Carnival bean stew festival at Laghetto Gabella in Curino
The Fagiolata del Buonumore is one of the most cherished events in the winter calendar of Curino, a small town in the province of Biella, Piedmont. Organized by Pro Loco Curino, the festival takes place every year in early February, right in the middle of the Carnival season. The highlight of the day is the distribution of the traditional bean stew, prepared in large cauldrons by the association's volunteers.
The gathering point is Laghetto Gabella, in the San Martino district, a five-hectare green area nestled in the rolling hills of Biella. Granted to the Pro Loco for its use, it has become the town's go-to venue for local festivities over the years. The serving begins around 11:30 AM, as hot bowls are passed from hand to hand among residents, friends, and visitors from the surrounding valleys.
The fagiolata is a ritual shared by many towns in the Biella area during Carnival: a humble yet generous dish made of beans, pork rinds, and other rustic ingredients, slow-cooked and offered to the community as a gesture of sharing. In Curino, this custom is known as Fagiolata del Buonumore (Bean Stew of Good Humor), reflecting the cheerful and friendly spirit of the day.
The event is part of the annual program of Pro Loco Curino, which has been active since 1992 and is affiliated with UNPLI. Throughout the year, the association enlivens the area with various events, from the Festa del Laghetto in Fiore (Flowering Pond Festival) in late May to the autumn chestnut festival in October, as well as dinners for members and friends.
The Fagiolata del Buonumore is not a grand, flashy spectacle, but an authentic village festival: people come to enjoy a traditional dish, chat with neighbors, and gather outdoors despite the February chill. It is the perfect opportunity to discover the hospitality of a small town in the Biella hinterland and to savor a piece of living Piedmontese folk culture.
