The international watercolour on paper convention in Fabriano
FabrianoInAcquarello is the most important international convention dedicated to watercolour painting on paper, held every spring in Fabriano, in the province of Ancona, in the heart of the Marche region. Founded in 2010 on the initiative of Anna Massinissa and the InArte association, the event attracts thousands of artists from around the world to the Apennine city, transforming it into an authentic open-air museum.
It is no coincidence that the event chose Fabriano: the town has been famous for centuries for its high-quality paper production and is recognised as a UNESCO Creative City. Fabriano's watermarked paper, produced since the Middle Ages, is the natural support for watercolour artists worldwide, and this deep connection between the territory and watercolour art makes the exhibition unique.
Each edition offers a packed schedule of free activities open to everyone:
The event traditionally unfolds in several stages: a preview in Bologna followed by the main days in Fabriano, while the Città InAcquarello network takes artists to other villages and art cities in Central Italy. The International Collection, with over a thousand works donated by artists, remains on display in the city's historic venues for several weeks after the convention closes, extending the experience well beyond the opening days.
FabrianoInAcquarello is more than just an exhibition: it is a global gathering that celebrates sharing, friendship between cultures, and the universal language of watercolour. For the city of Fabriano, it represents one of the most anticipated cultural events of the year, capable of uniting the artisanal tradition of the Marche region with a profoundly international vocation.
The XVII edition of FabrianoInAcquarello confirms the event's international and participatory vocation. After the Bologna preview at the Teatro Arena del Sole (April 21st-23rd), the convention comes to Fabriano from April 24th to 26th, 2026, involving the most evocative locations in the historic centre.
The programme includes around 3,000 artists from around the world, 36 technical demonstrations, collective performances, workshops, plein air sessions, and meetings with master papermakers. The International Collection exhibitions, featuring over 1,000 works, are inaugurated during the convention days and remain open to visitors in the city's historic venues until June 14th, 2026. From April 27th to 30th, the Città InAcquarello network takes artists to Perugia, Pioraco, Fermo, and Urbino. Admission to all activities is free.
Fabriano is reachable by train on the Rome–Ancona line (Fabriano station) and by car via the SS76 della Val d'Esino. The nearest airports are Ancona-Falconara and Perugia.
Access to exhibitions, demonstrations, and activities is free. It is advisable to consult the official programme for times and exhibition venues.
Fabriano's historic centre offers hotels, B&Bs, and farm stays in the surrounding Apennine area. Advance booking is recommended during the convention days.
