The UNESCO Creative City festival where paper becomes culture
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In Fabriano, in the heart of the province of Ancona and the hinterland of Marche, paper is not just a product: it is an eight-century-old identity. It is from this heritage that Fabriano Carta è Cultura was born, the festival promoted by the Municipality of Fabriano in its capacity as a UNESCO Creative City for craftsmanship and folk arts. For four days, usually in September, the entire historic center comes alive with events that intertwine music, theatre, literature, cinema, exhibitions, and conferences, all linked by the common thread of the binomial between paper and creativity.
The festival is designed as a journey through the city's symbolic places: the Teatro Gentile, the Pinacoteca Civica Bruno Molajoli, the Museum of Paper and Watermarks, the Oratorio della Carità, the Cathedral of San Venanzio, the city squares, and libraries. Concerts, performances, book presentations, exhibitions, and workshops on handmade paper making accompany the public in discovering a living tradition that continues to renew itself in these very spaces.
A distinctive element of the event is the Forum of UNESCO Creative Cities, the annual meeting that brings together the Italian cities of the creative network in Fabriano to discuss the role of culture in the sustainable development of territories. In recent editions, the debate has addressed highly topical issues, such as the relationship between culture and artificial intelligence, intertwining international reflection with the local and identity dimension.
Alongside the meetings, the festival showcases creativity in all its forms: photographic and art exhibitions, installations, film screenings, opera galas, and music evenings at the Teatro Gentile, urban trekking along the paper heritage routes, and demonstrations of ancient production techniques. Fabriano Carta è Cultura has thus become an event that tells how an artisanal vocation can transform into a cultural engine, a tourist attraction, and an opportunity for participation for the entire community.
The 4th edition of Fabriano Carta è Cultura is expected in September 2026. The Municipality of Fabriano has stated that it is working on the event, which will renew the usual format spread across the historic center of the UNESCO Creative City.
Following the previous editions, the festival will offer four days of concerts, performances, book presentations, exhibitions, screenings, and the Forum of UNESCO Creative Cities. The detailed program, including artists, guests, times, and venues, will be published by the organizers closer to the event.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published by the organizers. In line with previous editions, the event is expected to span four days with concerts and performances at the Teatro Gentile, exhibitions at the Pinacoteca Molajoli and the Museum of Paper, book presentations, film screenings, handmade paper-making workshops, and the Forum of UNESCO Creative Cities.
Precise dates, lineup, and schedule will be announced on the Municipality of Fabriano website and on the official channels of the Creative City in the months preceding the event.
Fabriano is located in the hinterland of the province of Ancona. By train, it is served by the Rome–Ancona line, with a station in the city center. By car, it can be reached from the SS76 (Vallesina) when coming from the Adriatic coast or from Umbria.
Most events are free admission; for some events at the Teatro Gentile and for guided tours, booking may be required. It is advisable to check the official program on the Municipality of Fabriano website and on the Creative City channels.
The festival usually takes place in September, over four days, in the historic center of Fabriano.
