Special evening opening of the Archaeological Museum of the Ipogei in Trinitapoli
Every year, on a May evening, the European Night of Museums brings a touch of culture to Trinitapoli, a town in the province of Barletta-Andria-Trani, Puglia. The Archaeological Museum of the Ipogei joins this continental initiative promoted by the Ministry of Culture and sponsored by UNESCO and the Council of Europe, opening its doors in the evening to offer a unique and intimate experience of the local archaeological heritage. It is the perfect opportunity to rediscover one of the most fascinating sites of Italian prehistory after sunset.
The museum houses materials recovered from excavations at the Madonna di Loreto site, home to one of the largest Bronze Age sanctuaries in the Mediterranean. Around 1700 BC, an indigenous population settled in the lower Tavoliere, along the Ofanto river, carving numerous hypogea (underground chambers) into the limestone crust to serve as places of worship. The exhibition halls recount the lives, rituals, and beliefs of this mysterious people through artifacts, grave goods, and findings from the excavations: votive offerings, ornaments, skeletal remains, and ritual objects linked to fertility and ancestor worship.
The museum serves as the gateway to the nearby Archaeological Park of the Ipogei, which spans approximately seven hectares and preserves about fifteen hypogean structures, ranging from smaller chambers to monumental environments such as the Ipogeo dei Bronzi and the Ipogeo degli Avori. This complex is unique in the landscape of Italian prehistoric archaeology, documenting remarkably rich cult practices and revealing a community deeply connected to the sacred and funerary dimensions.
During the European Night of Museums, the public is invited to explore the exhibition halls along paths described as evocative and full of charm. Guided tours by reservation allow visitors to delve deeper into the meaning of the artifacts and the history of the territory through direct dialogue with museum staff. Designed for archaeology enthusiasts, curious visitors, and families, the initiative transforms the evening visit into a convivial and accessible experience, bringing both adults and children closer to their cultural heritage.
Situated between the Tavoliere plain and the wetlands of the Saline di Margherita di Savoia, Trinitapoli boasts a profound bond with its ancient history, evidenced by the hypogea themselves. The European Night of Museums is a precious opportunity to highlight the identity of the Municipality of Trinitapoli and the entire province of Barletta-Andria-Trani, placing a small but significant provincial museum within the European cultural circuit that unites hundreds of cities across the continent in a single night.
