Esperia's autumn festival celebrating chestnuts and Ciociaria flavors
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
When autumn paints the forests of the Aurunci Mountains, the village of Esperia, in the province of Frosinone, gathers in Piazza Roma for the Chestnut Festival. This relatively new event was created to celebrate one of the cold season's most iconic fruits: the chestnut, a staple of traditional Ciociaria peasant cuisine. Early editions have quickly won over both locals and visitors from neighboring towns, thanks to the genuine, family-friendly atmosphere that defines the most authentic festivals in Lazio.
The festival is promoted by the Pro Loco of Esperia in collaboration with the La Papera Trekking Association, with the patronage of the Municipality of Esperia. Its dual goal is to showcase local products and strengthen community ties through an evening in the town square, open to everyone and perfect for families. The chestnut, once a dietary cornerstone for mountain families, serves as a bridge to share the history and customs of a town that has carefully preserved its roots.
The heart of the festival is, of course, the food stalls. While there is no shortage of classic roasted chestnuts, cooked and served hot right in the square, the true star is the local specialty known as «vrocchigl' e sauciccia». This traditional peasant dish, featuring chestnuts and sausage, is prepared according to recipes passed down through generations. Around the stalls, you can smell the woodsmoke and home-cooked food, embarking on a culinary journey for those eager to discover the authentic flavors of the Ciociaria region.
Located between southern Lazio and the border with Campania, Esperia is an Aurunci Mountains village rich in history, overlooked by castle ruins and surrounded by olive groves and chestnut woods. Visiting the town during the Chestnut Festival means pairing the pleasure of good food with the discovery of an authentic territory, far from the beaten path of mass tourism. It is a small-town celebration that, year after year, is becoming a staple of the Ciociaria autumn.
Following the success of previous editions, the Esperia Chestnut Festival is expected to return in autumn 2026, as is customary in October, in Piazza Roma. The format is expected to remain the same: food stalls dedicated to chestnuts, the local chestnut and sausage specialty, an autumn market, and a convivial evening in the heart of the Ciociaria village.
The official dates and the detailed program have not yet been announced by the organizers. This page will be updated as soon as the Pro Loco of Esperia and the municipality release information regarding the new edition.
Esperia is located in the province of Frosinone, in southern Lazio. By car, take the A1 Milan-Naples motorway and exit at Cassino or Pontecorvo, then follow the provincial roads toward the Aurunci Mountains. The festival takes place in Piazza Roma, in the town center.
The event is traditionally held in October, starting in the evening from 6:00 PM. Dates for the upcoming edition have not yet been officially announced; we recommend checking the Pro Loco of Esperia's website or the municipality's social media channels for updates.
Admission to the festival is free; you only pay for what you consume at the food stalls. We recommend wearing clothing suitable for autumn mountain evenings.
