The vintage cycling granfondo in the Dolomites of Alta Pusteria
Eroica Dolomiti is the annual event that transforms San Candido/Innichen, in the Puster Valley, into an open-air museum of heroic cycling. Organized by L'Eroica srl, the event belongs to the global Eroica family, drawing cyclists from across Europe to the Alta Pusteria Dolomites in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, Trentino-Alto Adige, all mounted on vintage road bikes.
True to the Eroica philosophy, participants must ride road bikes built up to the 1980s or at least thirty years old, featuring downtube shifters, brake cables routed outside the handlebars, and pedals with toe clips and straps. Attire must be strictly vintage, featuring the iconic wool jerseys. This is not a speed race, but a tribute to the fatigue, adventure, and heroism of cycling's golden age, played out over challenging gravel roads and asphalt.
The start is located at Piazza del Magistrato in San Candido. Cyclists can choose from three distances:
Along the way, traditional "Eroica-style" refreshment stops offer local delicacies to fuel the participants.
Eroica Dolomiti is a full weekend celebration. The ride is complemented by a side program featuring a vintage bicycle and parts market, aperitifs with live music, and the traditional Eroica Dinner, a convivial gathering for participants in San Candido. The backdrop of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo and the UNESCO-listed Dolomite peaks makes the experience truly unforgettable.
The event highlights the landscape of Alta Pusteria and the town of San Candido, a premier cycling destination in South Tyrol. Eroica Dolomiti blends gentle sport, cycling culture, history, and South Tyrolean gastronomy into a unique September weekend.
The tenth-anniversary edition was held on Saturday, September 5, 2026, in San Candido/Innichen, starting from Piazza del Magistrato at 8:00 AM. The three historic routes were confirmed: the short (approx. 73 km, 1,200 m elevation gain) towards Cortina, Tre Croci Pass, and Lake Misurina; the medium (approx. 91 km, 1,870 m) featuring the Prato Piazza gravel road; and the long (approx. 110 km, 2,740 m) reaching the Cornetto di Confine.
As per tradition, the ride on bicycles at least thirty years old was accompanied by Eroica-style refreshment stops with local products, a vintage bicycle market, and the Eroica Dinner. Organized by L'Eroica srl.
San Candido/Innichen is accessible by train via the Puster Valley line (San Candido station) and by car via the SS49 Pusteria road. The start is in the town center at Piazza del Magistrato.
Registration is online via the official website and is limited to 500 participants. In recent editions, the fee was approximately 75 euros for early birds and 85 euros thereafter; the Eroica Dinner is paid separately (approx. 35-40 euros). Please check the official website for current pricing and availability.
Bicycles must comply with the Eroica regulations (vintage models at least 30 years old). Arriving a day early is recommended to soak up the village atmosphere and visit the market. Book your accommodation in Alta Pusteria well in advance.
