The great celebration of Italian culture in Pescara
The Ennio Flaiano International Awards were founded in 1974 by Edoardo Tiboni to honor the memory of Ennio Flaiano (1910-1972), the writer, screenwriter, playwright, and journalist born in Pescara, who co-authored masterpieces of Italian cinema with Federico Fellini. For over half a century, the event has been one of the most anticipated cultural fixtures in Abruzzo, attracting leading figures from cinema, theatre, television, and literature to the Adriatic city.
Organized by the Ennio Flaiano Cultural Association, chaired by Carla Tiboni, the awards are divided into several sections that provide a comprehensive overview of Italian creative talent:
The iconic Golden Pegasus is the symbol of the event, awarded to winners across the various categories and for lifetime achievement.
Over the decades, the Flaiano Awards have recognized world-class figures, including Nobel laureates in literature such as Josรฉ Saramago, Derek Walcott, Seamus Heaney, Alice Munro, Imre Kertรฉsz, and Wole Soyinka, as well as cinema masters like Michelangelo Antonioni masters like Michelangelo Antonioni and Ken Loach. This international dimension coexists with deep roots in the Abruzzo region, for which the awards serve as cultural ambassadors.
The event takes place in Pescara, Abruzzo, with events hosted at the Aurum - The Factory of Ideas and the grand open-air gala evening in Piazza della Rinascita, the city's famous "living room" overlooking the Adriatic. The final ceremony, broadcast live on television, transforms the square into an open-air stage, free and open to the public, blending award presentations, testimonials, and entertainment.
The 2026 edition of the Ennio Flaiano International Awards, the 53rd, brought Pescara to life with a first part dedicated to Fiction on June 27 at the Aurum, followed by the traditional grand gala award ceremony on Sunday, July 5 in Piazza della Rinascita, broadcast live on television.
The Golden Pegasus for Lifetime Achievement was awarded to Michele Placido, in the year of his eightieth birthday. Here are some of the main awards:
A special award was conferred upon prosecutor Nicola Gratteri for his civic commitment. The event once again confirmed the role of Pescara and Abruzzo as a benchmark for Italian culture.
