Philosophy conversations by the Adriatic Sea in Francavilla al Mare
Filosofia al Mare is one of the most iconic cultural events in Francavilla al Mare, a seaside town in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo. Every summer, for four consecutive evenings, the festival transforms the central Piazza Sirena, facing the Adriatic beach, into an open-air agora where philosophy steps out of academic halls to reach a broad, non-specialist audience.
The initiative is promoted by the Filosofia al Mare Association in collaboration with the local branch of the Italian Philosophical Society and under the patronage of the Municipality of Francavilla al Mare. Over the years, the festival has grown into a cornerstone of the Abruzzo cultural summer, attracting some of Italy's most renowned thinkers.
Each edition revolves around a single guiding theme, explored night after night. The conversations, usually held at 9:30 PM, feature two speakers per evening who approach the topic from different perspectivesโhistorical, political, ethical, and epistemological. The language remains accessible: the stated goal is to bring citizens closer to philosophy without sacrificing rigor. In case of bad weather, the meetings move to the Sirena Auditorium.
The heart of the festival is the Carlo Tatasciore National Philosophy Prize, named after the late philosopher and cultural organizer who was a pillar of Francavilla's intellectual life. The award is aimed at young researchers and PhD holders working in modern and contemporary philosophy: the winner presents their work publicly during the final evening, bridging the gap between university research and the community.
Attending Filosofia al Mare means listening to high-level lectures just steps from the shoreline, accompanied by the evening Adriatic breeze and the lively atmosphere of a holiday resort. It is a unique way to experience a vacation in Abruzzo, where beach life by day and critical thinking by night coexist in a single experience. The festival is part of the broader summer program of the Municipality of Francavilla al Mare, enriching the tourist offerings of the Teatine coast.
The 17th edition of the festival takes place in Francavilla al Mare from July 9th to 12th, 2026, in Piazza Sirena, with sessions starting at 9:30 PM. The chosen theme is "Conversations on Democracy": a journey of reflection on the foundations, crises, and prospects of contemporary democracy.
The 2026 Carlo Tatasciore National Philosophy Prize is awarded to Andrea Pontalto (University of Trento); special mention to Alberto Merzari (University of Padua). Admission to all evenings is free.
