The festival celebrating the thornless artichoke in Pozzale, Empoli
The Empoli Artichoke Festival is one of the most cherished food and wine events of the spring in the Municipality of Empoli, in the Province of Florence, in the heart of Tuscany. The event takes place in the village of Pozzale, at the Circolo Arci and the Municipal Garden, and is organized by the La Costruenda Cultural Association with the support of the local community.
The undisputed star is the Empoli artichoke, a variety cultivated in the surrounding area since the 19th century. It is distinguished by its late production, typically between March and June, its bold and intense flavor, and above all, the fact that it is thornless, a feature that makes it easy to clean and cook. The entire festival revolves around this vegetable.
The heart of the festival is the food stand, open every evening from 7:00 PM. The menu is entirely built around the artichoke, prepared in numerous traditional Tuscan and rustic ways: from appetizers to first courses, main courses, and fried dishes. The kitchen is equipped to offer a gluten-free menu, including breaded items, and takeaway service is available for those who want to enjoy the festival dishes at home.
On holidays, social lunches by reservation are also scheduled, providing convivial moments that bring families and visitors together at the club's long tables. The event is entirely plastic-free, reflecting the organizers' commitment to sustainability.
Beyond the conviviality, the Empoli Artichoke Festival has a cultural and promotional mission: it aims to enhance and revive the cultivation of this local variety, as part of a journey that also looks toward potential quality designation recognition. Over the years, the festival has become an opportunity to bring together producers, institutions, and enthusiasts around an agricultural excellence of the Empoli area and the Valdelsa.
The environment is that of the warm and genuine Tuscan village festivals: long tables, volunteers in the kitchen, the scent of fried artichokes, and the cheerfulness of the Pozzale Circolo Arci. An event suitable for everyone โ adults, seniors, children, and families โ to discover an authentic product and a piece of the rural tradition of the Empoli territory.
The 13th edition of the Empoli Artichoke Festival was held from April 25 to May 3, 2026, in the village of Pozzale, Empoli. For nine evenings, the food stand offered a rich menu based on the Empoli artichoke, accompanied by social lunches by reservation on holidays. The highlight of the edition was the conference on Saturday, May 3, dedicated to the revival of this Tuscan agricultural excellence.
