About Emigrant's Festival

Every August 14th, San Martino Valle Caudina, a village in the Avellino province, dedicates a special evening to those who left. The Emigrant's Festival brings together in Piazza XX Settembre the locals who have returned for the summer from Northern Italy, Europe, and the Americas. Following an evening mass, the square comes alive with food stalls serving traditional Caudina cuisine, live music, and folk dancing. It is more than just a festival; it is a celebration of homecoming, filled with stories, memories, and faces reunited after years apart.

A celebration for those returning home

In the municipality of San Martino Valle Caudina, in the province of Avellino, at the western edge of Irpinia and a stone's throw from the Sannio border, August 14th is a date everyone knows. It is the day of the Emigrant's Festival, an evening when the village gathers around those who left the Valle Caudina to work elsewhere and have returned home for their summer holidays. There is no specific product to celebrate or record to break: the focus is on the homecoming, and a square filled with people who haven't seen each other in a year or much longer.

The context: Valle Caudina and Irpinian emigration

Inland Campania, and Irpinia in particular, is a land of departures. From the great waves of migration to the Americas in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, to the trains bound for Germany, Switzerland, and the industrial triangle of Northern Italy after World War II, up to the professional and academic emigration of today: almost every family in San Martino Valle Caudina has someone living far away. The festival was born precisely from this, from the desire to turn a loss into an opportunity for connection. In recent years, the initiative has been included in the ministerial project Turismo delle Radici (Roots Tourism), promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation to bring descendants of emigrants back to Italian villages.

How the evening unfolds

The format is well-established and intentionally simple. It begins in church, with an evening mass celebrated at the parish of Saints Giovanni Battista and Martino Vescovo, dedicated to emigrants and families separated by distance. Immediately after, the community moves to Piazza XX Settembre, where food stalls are set up with traditional Caudina dishes, and the evening continues with live music and dancing until late.

  • Mass dedicated to emigrants at the parish church
  • Food stalls in the square featuring local recipes
  • Musical entertainment provided by local bands and performers
  • Dance performances by local dance schools
  • Intergenerational meeting: stories, memories, and family photos

Part of the "Illumina la Notte" summer

The Emigrant's Festival is not an isolated event: it is one of the highlights of the Illumina la Notte summer calendar, which the Municipality of San Martino Valle Caudina organizes every year together with local associations. Around mid-August, the schedule features the historical pageant of the Castellana, the candlelit procession of Saint Anthony, concerts in the Palazzo Ducale gardens, poetry festivals, and the Degustarte food event. Those arriving on August 14th will find a village in full swing, with the historic center animated for several consecutive days.

The village: castle, Palazzo Ducale, and the Partenio Mountains

San Martino Valle Caudina is dominated by its medieval castle, the complex of the Della Leonessa and later Pignatelli family, which watches over the town from the hilltop. It preserves a compact historic center made of narrow alleys, stone portals, and small squares. The municipal territory climbs up the Partenio Mountains, through beech forests and trails, looking across the Caudina plain toward Montesarchio and Benevento. It is a convenient base for those who want to discover a different side of Campania: villages, woods, generous tables, and the great Irpinian wines of Taurasi, Fiano di Avellino, and Greco di Tufo, all produced just a few kilometers away.

Why it's worth attending

The Emigrant's Festival is a small, free, and deeply authentic event: there is nothing staged for tourists, and for this very reason, it tells the story of the Valle Caudina better than many larger events. Those passing through here on Ferragosto will find a crowded square, a hot meal, and the chance to hear stories of departures and returns that span three continents and over a century of Campania's history.

Emigrant's Festival — edition 2026

As of the update of this page, the Municipality of San Martino Valle Caudina and the Pro Loco have not yet published the 2026 summer calendar with the date and program for the Emigrant's Festival. In documented editions, the event has fallen on August 14th, with evening mass and festivities in Piazza XX Settembre. The date indicated here is therefore provisional and should be verified on the organizers' official channels before traveling.

2026 Edition: information not yet published

For the summer of 2026, there are no official announcements yet from the Municipality of San Martino Valle Caudina, the Pro Loco, or the Piazza XX Settembre committee regarding the Emigrant's Festival. The Illumina la Notte summer calendar, which has hosted the event in previous years, is usually released by the Irpinian press close to the first week of August.

For this reason, the date shown is a simple placeholder and the program is not available. Those who wish to attend can follow the social media channels of the Pro Loco San Martino Valle Caudina and the events section of the municipal website, where the poster is published along with the rest of the summer programming for the Valle Caudina.
