The Passion of Christ comes to life in the streets of Giuliano di Lecce
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the small village of Giuliano di Lecce, a district of the Municipality of Castrignano del Capo in the province of Lecce, the sacred representation "Ecce Homo" transforms the streets of the historic center into a grand open-air theater. In the extreme tip of Salento, just a stone's throw from Santa Maria di Leuca, the community stages the final hours of Jesus' life in an itinerant journey that winds through the houses, small squares, and alleys of the village.
The performance retraces the stages of the Passion: from the Garden of Olives to the arrest, from the flagellation to the crucifixion, and finally the Resurrection. Spectators follow the procession along the village streets, immersed in an intense and evocative atmosphere where living tableaux take shape amidst the ancient architecture of this corner of Capo di Leuca. It is a story of faith, suffering, and ultimately, redemption, blending popular devotion with theatrical staging.
The hallmark of "Ecce Homo" is the participation of the residents of Giuliano themselves, who take on the roles of the characters of the Passion. People of all ages take part in the preparations, bringing to life a collective project that was born almost by chance and has become an opportunity for collaboration and sharing for the entire small community. The direction and screenplay are by Alessandro Minerva, while the event is promoted by the San Giovanni Crisostomo Parish of Giuliano, led by parish priest Father Andrea Malagnino.
The event is held under the patronage of the Province of Lecce, the Municipality of Castrignano del Capo, and the Union of Municipalities of Terra di Leuca, reflecting the value the initiative holds for the entire lower Salento region of Puglia. The village of Giuliano, with its intact historic center, offers a unique setting and becomes a protagonist of the performance itself.
"Ecce Homo" takes place in the spring, near Easter, with the procession departing from via Regina Elena. The event is free to attend and is an appointment that weaves together spirituality, popular tradition, and community life, drawing visitors and curious onlookers from all over the Capo di Leuca area to Giuliano di Lecce.
At the moment, the San Giovanni Crisostomo Parish of Giuliano has not yet announced the official dates for the 2026 edition of "Ecce Homo". The itinerant sacred representation of the Passion of Christ, which in previous years has taken place in the spring around Easter, is expected to renew the appointment in the streets of the historic center of Giuliano di Lecce, a district of Castrignano del Capo. The detailed program and the calendar of performances will be released by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
