Young European slalom canoeing talents on the waters of the Dora Baltea
The ECA Junior Slalom Cup is the continental slalom canoeing circuit for young athletes, organized annually by the European Canoe Association in various European locations. The Italian leg takes place in Ivrea, in the Metropolitan City of Turin (Piedmont), at the Canoe Stadium on Via Dora Baltea. This artificial canal, fed by the waters of the Dora Baltea, is widely considered one of the most technical and picturesque race courses on the international scene.
The competition is reserved for young paddlers and includes U14, U16, U18, and U23 categories, with both men's and women's events in K1 (kayak) and C1 (canoe) disciplines. The program typically spans two days: the first is dedicated to classic slalom, where the best result from two runs counts, while the second features short slalom, a faster and more spectacular format with qualifying rounds leading to the finals.
Each edition of the Ivrea leg attracts dozens of athletes representing numerous European nations, with competitive teams from Spain, Slovakia, Slovenia, Germany, Austria, and Croatia. The event is organized by the Ivrea Canoa Club, a historic local association that provides the facility, athlete accommodation, and all logistical support for the event.
For decades, Ivrea has been a key hub for slalom canoeing in Italy: the Canoe Stadium has hosted Italian championships, World Cup events, and the Junior and U23 World Championships. The ECA Junior Slalom Cup leg confirms the Piedmontese city's sporting vocation and offers the public the chance to watch high-level competition for free, set against a stunning natural backdrop at the foot of the Alps.
