The summer auteur cinema festival by Galleria Toledo
Doppio Sogno is the summer auteur cinema festival curated by the Teatro Stabile d'Innovazione Galleria Toledo, a historic venue in the Montecalvario district, in the heart of the ancient center of Naples, Campania. For over twenty-five editions, the event has guided the Neapolitan public along a journey that intertwines cinema, literature, and critical thought, bringing open-air screenings to some of the most beautiful locations in the city and its metropolitan area.
The formula has remained true to itself over the years: films strictly in original language with Italian subtitles, symbolic entry prices, and a selection that alternates between cinema history classics, cult works, and contemporary titles. This is not just a simple summer arena: every evening is crafted as a small cultural event, with introductions, readings, and meetings that offer the audience keys to interpretation and food for thought. The artistic direction is entrusted to Laura Angiulli, with organizational management by Rosario Squillace.
The 26th edition, scheduled from July 1st to 30th, 2026, is divided into two distinct sections, hosted in two different venues within the metropolitan area of Naples:
The thread connecting the two sections is the reading cycle «Lessico Napoletano – Lo Cunto de li cunti»: before each screening, while waiting for sunset, the actors of the Galleria Toledo resident company give voice to the fairy tales of Giambattista Basile, the 17th-century Neapolitan author whose collection anticipated Perrault and the Brothers Grimm. It is a dialogue between word and image, between Neapolitan oral tradition and cinematic language, and it has become the most recognizable signature of the festival over the years.
Throughout its editions, Doppio Sogno has inhabited different spaces in the city: the garden of Villa Pignatelli, on the Riviera di Chiaia, hosted the 2025 edition, while in 2026 the festival is split between the Centro Don Orione and the 18th-century Reggia di Portici, with its Botanical Garden overlooking the Gulf. This almost itinerant vocation is part of the event's identity, offering the public a different way to look at Naples and its territory every summer.
One of the elements that has made Doppio Sogno a fixed appointment of the Neapolitan summer is its accessibility: the standard ticket remains fixed at 5 euros, a symbolic figure for quality programming that would be reserved for film archives elsewhere. At the Reggia di Portici, some special evenings are also planned at 15 euros, combining a guided tour of the Botanical Garden, a themed aperitif, and the screening: a formula designed to help people discover the historical and natural heritage of the Vesuvius area alongside cinema.
Doppio Sogno is traditionally held in the month of July, with screenings concentrated on weekdays and entry in the evening, after sunset. It is one of the longest-running and most recognizable events of the cultural summer in the Municipality of Naples and the entire Campania region.
The 2026 edition of Doppio Sogno, the twenty-sixth, renews the historic formula of the Galleria Toledo festival by dividing it into two complementary paths. The first part, «One Way Out», is held from July 1st to 17th at the Centro Don Orione in Naples: inspired by Edgar Morin's reflections, it proposes cinema as an exercise in critical thinking through works that recount freedom, transformation, and individual resistance.
From July 22nd to 30th, the festival moves to the Reggia di Portici, in the Pallacorda area of the Botanical Garden, with «Realmente bambini», a section dedicated to the origin of fairy tales and the educational power of storytelling, built around Giambattista Basile and his "Cunto de li cunti".
All screenings are in original version with Italian subtitles, with entry at 8:15 PM and tickets at 5 euros. At the Reggia di Portici, special evenings are planned with a guided tour of the Botanical Garden and a themed aperitif.
The Neapolitan leg of the 2026 edition takes place at the Centro Don Orione, at Via Donnalbina 14, in the historic center of Naples, a few steps from the Galleria Toledo headquarters (Via Concezione a Montecalvario 34). The second part of the festival is held at the Reggia di Portici, in the Pallacorda area of the Botanical Garden, at Via UniversitĂ 100 in Portici.
The Centro Don Orione can be reached on foot from the Line 1 subway stations "Toledo" and "UniversitĂ ", as well as from the Montesanto station (Cumana and Line 2). For the Reggia di Portici, we recommend the regional train to Portici-Ercolano or the Circumvesuviana. By car, the historic center of Naples is subject to traffic restrictions: it is better to use interchange parking lots and public transport.
Entry is 5 euros for standard screenings; 15 euros for special evenings at the Reggia di Portici, which include a guided tour, themed aperitif, and film. Tickets can be purchased at the box office and in advance at www.azzurroservice.net.
